27 Jesus leads the community of his disciples to Jerusalem Section C: Luke 9,51–21,38 A. COMPOSITION OF THE SECTION 2. THE PARALLELISM OF THE EXTREME SUB-SECTIONS (C1–C3; C6–C8) Relations between the initial sequences (C1 and C6) The first sub-sequences (9,51–10-16; 17,11-37) 9,51 It happened that as the days drew near for him to be taken up, he resolutely set his face to go towards Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead of him. And as they went, they entered a village of the SAMARITANS, to prepare for him. 53 But they did not receive him because his face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 Seeing this, the disciples James and John said: «Lord, do you want us to tell FIRE to come down FROM HEAVEN and consume them?» 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 And they went on to another village. --------------------------------------------------------------57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him: «I will follow you wherever you go.» 58 Jesus said to him: «Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but THE SON OF MAN has nowhere to lay his head.» 59 Then he said to another: «Follow me.» He said: «Let me first go and bury my father.» 60 He said to him: «Leave the dead bury their dead, but you go and proclaim THE KINGDOM OF GOD.» 61 Another said: «I will follow you, Lord, but let me first go and take leave of those at my home.» 62 Jesus said to him: «No one having put his hand to the plough and looking back is fit for the KINGDOM OF GOD.» 10,1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two before his face, into every city and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He said to them: «The harvest is rich but the labourers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Take no purse with you, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one along the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say: “Peace to this house!” 6 If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have to offer, for the labourer is worthy of his wages; do not move from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you 9 and heal the sick there and say to them: “THE KINGDOM OF GOD has come near to you!” 10 But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, having come into its streets, say: 11 “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you; but know this: THE KINGDOM OF GOD has come near to you!” --------------------------------------------------------------12 I tell you that it will be more tolerable in that day for SODOM than for that town. 13 Woe to you Chorazin! Woe to you Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, you will not be exalted to heaven! You will be brought down to hell! 16 The one who hears you hears me and the one who rejects you rejects me. The one who rejects me, rejects him who sent me.» 17,11 It happened that as he went to Jerusalem, he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers who stood at a distance. 13 They lifted up their voices, saying: «Lord Jesus, have mercy on us!» 14 Seeing (them), Jesus said: «Having departed, show yourselves to the priests.» And it happened as they went, that they were cleansed. 15 One of them, seeing that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice 16 and fell down on his face at the feet of Jesus giving him thanks. And he was a SAMARITAN. 17 Answering, Jesus said: «Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Where there not any found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?» 19 And he said to him: «Rise and go your way, your faith has saved you.» -------------------------------------------------------------20 The Pharisees asked him: «When was the KINGDOM OF GOD to come?» He answered them: «The KINGDOM OF GOD does not come with observation. 21 They will not say: “Look, here it is, or, there!” For indeed the KINGDOM OF GOD is within you.» -------------------------------------------------------------22 He said to his disciples: «The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of THE SON OF MAN and you will not see it. 23 They will say to you: “Look, it is there, or, Look, it is here!” Make no move, do not set off in pursuit. 24 For as the lighting flashing from one part of the heaven lights up the other, so will be THE SON OF MAN in his day. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 As it was in Noah’s days, so will it also be in the days of THE SON OF MAN: 27 they were eating and drinking, marrying wives and husbands, until the day that Noah entered the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was in Lot’s days: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 and, on the day that Lot went out of SODOM, God made it rain FIRE and brimstone FROM HEAVEN and destroyed them all; 30 even so will it be in the day when THE SON OF MAN is revealed. 31 In that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night, there will be two in one bed, the one will be taken and the other left; 35 two women will be grinding together, the one will be taken and the other left.» -------------------------------------------------------------37 Answering, they said: «Where, Lord?» He said to them: «Wherever the body is, there too will the vultures gather.» The last sub-sequences (10,21-42; 18,15-30) 10,21 In that hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said: «I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the wise and the clever and revealing them to littlechildren. Yes, Father, for such was your will. 22 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father and no one knows who the Son is except the Father and who the Father is except the Son and the one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.» 23 Then turning to his disciples, he said privately to them: «Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear and have not heard it!» ------------------------------------------------------25 And behold A LAWYER stood up to put him to test: «Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?» 26 He said to him: «What is written in the Law? How do you read?» 27 Answering, he said: «You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.» 28 He said to him: «You have answered right; do this and you will live.» 29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus: «And who is my neighbour?» 30 Jesus replied and said: «A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers; they stripped him, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance, a priest came down that road and, seeing him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite coming to the place, seeing him, passed by on the other side. 33 A Samaritan, as he journeyed, came on him and, seeing him, was moved with compassion. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. Having set him on his own mount, he brought him to an inn and he took care of him . 35 Next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the inn keeper and said: “Take care of him and whatever more you spend, I will repay you on my way back.” 36 Which of these three, do you think, was neighbour to him who fell among the robbers?» 37 He said: «The one who has made mercy toward him.» Jesus said to him: «Go, and do the same yourself.» ------------------------------------------------------38 [It happened] as they went that he entered a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 She had a sister called Mary: having sat down at the Lord’s feet, she heard his Word. 40 Now Martha, she was distracted with much serving. Having stopped, she said: «Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to come and help me.» 41 Answering, the Lord said to her: «Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things; 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part; and it is not to be taken from her.» 18,15 They also brought babies to him, for him to touch them. Seeing this, the disciples rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him and said: «Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 In truth I tell you: anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.» ---------------------------------------------------------18 A RULER asked him: «Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?» 19 But Jesus said to him: «Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone! 20 You know the commandments: “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal, you shall not give false witness, honour your father and your mother”.» 21 He said: «All these things I have kept from my youth.» 22 Having heard, Jesus said to him: «One thing you still lack: Sell everything you own, and distribute to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.» 23 Having heard this, he became very sad for he was extremely rich. 24 Seeing him, Jesus said: «How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter the kingdom of God!» 26 Those who were listening said: «Who then can be saved?» 27 He said: «What is impossible with men is possible with God.» ---------------------------------------------------------28 Peter said: «Look, we have left all and followed you!» 29 He said to them: «In truth I tell you: There is no one who has left house, wife, brothers, parents, children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times as much in this present age and in the world to come eternal life.» Relations between the final sequences (C3 and C8) 12,4 To you my friends I say: Do not be afraid of those who KILL the body and after that have no more that they can do. 5 I will show you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has KILLED, has the power to cast into the Gehenna; yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Even THE HAIRS OF YOUR HEAD are all numbered. Do not fear: you are of more value than many sparrows! 8 I tell you: whoever declares himself for me in the presence of men, the Son of Man will declare himself for him in the presence of God’s angels; 9 but the one who denies me before men, he will be denied before God’s angels. 10 Everyone who says a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but no one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will be forgiven. 11 When they take you before synagogues and magistrates and authorities, DO NOT worry ABOUT how TO DEFEND yourself nor what to say; 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.» 21, 12 Before all this, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name’s sake. 13 This will lead you to bear witness. 14 Make up your minds NOT to prepare your DEFENCE. 15 Because I myself shall give you a mouth and a wisdom, that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by your parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends; they WILL PUT TO DEATH some of you 17 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. 18 But NOT A HAIR OF YOUR HEAD will perish: 19 by your endurance you will gain your lives. 12,35 Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning 36 and you yourselves be like men waiting for their Master to return from the wedding feast, so that coming and knocking they may open to him immediately. 37 Blessed those servants whom the Lord coming will find watching! In truth I tell you he will gird himself, sit them down at table and come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or in the third, and find them so, blessed are those servants! 39 Realize that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not let his house be broken. 40 And you, be ready for THE SON OF MAN is coming at an hour you do not expect.» 41 Peter said: «Lord, are you telling this parable for us or even for everyone?» 42 The Lord said: «Who then is the steward which is faithful and wise whom the Lord will set over his household to give the portion of grain at the proper time? 43 Blessed that servant whom his Lord coming will find so! 44 Truly I tell you he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if this servant says in his heart: “My Lord is delayed in coming” and he begins to beat male and female servants and to eat, drink and GET DRUNK, 46 then he will come the Lord of this servant on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know and he will cut him off and will appoint his portion with the unbelievers. 21,32 Amen, I tell you that this generation will not pass away until all these things happen. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, my words will not pass away. 34 Take heed of yourselves lest your hearts be burdened with dissipations, DRUNKENNESS and cares of life and that day come upon you suddenly 35 like a trap. It will come indeed upon all the dwellers on the face of the whole earth. 36 Keep watch, praying at all times, for you may have strength to escape all that is going to happen and to stand before THE SON OF MAN.» The first sub-section: JESUS STARTS HIS ASCENT TO JERUSALEM Sequence C1: The departure for the mission Sequence C2: Jesus, 9:51–10:42 disputed sign, Sequence C3: The disciple judges judges according to the end 11:1-54 12:1–13:21 The second sub-section: THE GREAT LAW OF REVERSAL Sequence C4: «Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and who humbles himself will be exalted» 13:22–14:35 Sequence C5: «Whatever is raised for men The third sub-section: is an abomination to God» THE CHRIST FULFILS HIS ASCENT TO JERUSALEM Sequence C6: The giving up for the kingdom Sequence C7: Jesus, 17:11–18:30 disputed king, judges Sequence C8: The Christ 15:1–17:10 judges according to the end 18:31–19:46 19:47–21:38
