Wednesday October 31, 2012
Alpha Omega 3:00 - 4:30 pm
Attendance: Ms. Lori Belows, Ms. Nicole Lacasse-Brass, Ms. Jackie Gruber, Dr. Anthony Iacopino,
Ms. Heather Katrick Ms. Kristjana Oliver, Dr. German Ramirez, Ms. Sina Alleegro-Sacco, Dr. Dieter
Schönwetter, and Mr. Sam Vagianos.

1. Welcome
2. Approvals (Dr. Schönwetter)

b. Minutes of September 28, 2012 Meeting
3. Old Business
a. (DS) Request retreat feedback to be transcribed.
b. √(KO) send doodle for meetings for next 3 months.
c. √(SV) Confidentiality agreement as part of our involvement in Steering Committee.
d. √(SV) DHC encouraged to meeting monthly with their departmental/school support
staff, to address all needs, and to provide a summary report to SV.
e. √(SV) DHC encouraged to close one clinic/year to support Dean initiatives, such as the
Faculty-wide retreat. Dean to communicate this at DHC
f. √(DS) to request all Student Class Presidents to become ambassadors of the Dean’s
initiative on Student Experience at the Oct 10, 2012 SFAC meeting
g. √(DS) to request all OWI steering members to be advocates of the Dean’s initiative on
the Outstanding Workplace Environment and to intentionally influence 10 other people
in their areas.
h. √(TI) Dean to encourage his Department Heads/Directors to be stronger advocates of his
Outstanding Workplace Initiative.
4. New Business
a. Plan the Mon., Dec 17, 2012 Faculty of Dentistry Academics and Staff Retreat
i. Theme: Team Building
ii. Current Needs:
1. How to change from a vertical perspective to more of a horizontal
perspective (top-down vs. respect toward each other - collegial;
equal voice)
2. Importance of leadership being a team leader vs. dictator.
3. We need a change in culture
a. People at the top who are at the top get involved with those at
the bottom, role up their sleeves and get involved
b. Workers feel more as part of the institution in their
contributions vs. just doing a job.
c. People to leave their ego’s at home
d. Everyone in the institution is important as we all depend on
each other
iii. Goal(s):
1. Change of Culture: (define it based on the OWI needs assessment
survey from Ros and Mark)

1. Leaders becoming more involved with team = community
a. What do leaders do successfully to create community?
b. Defining what the success strategies are.
c. Best practice model in being team
2. Employees feeling more as contributers vs. just work and leaving at
the end of their shift

a. 9:00 - 9:20 Intro goal short term and long term goals of the
OWI: Dean
b. 9:20 - 9:30 Info on new initiative completed and Info on
initiatives in works.
c. 9:30 - 10:00 review of the OWI survey specifically in terms of
the need for Team Building
d. Action Item: (RH) to find key items from the OWI Dentistry
survey that deal with team building and have these ready to
present.
e. 10:10 - 10:20 Nutrition Break
f. 10:30 - 12:00 Drum Café
g. 12:00 - 1:00 Dean’s Staff and Faculty Appreciation Lunch
h. 1:00 - 3:00 Ros and Mark - team building activities

1. Action Item: (DS, SV, KO) to meet with Ros and Mark to provide
request and direction of the retreat.

1. Action item (DS, RH) to meet with Drum Café troop to discuss goals
and objectives of our retreat.

and get the tangible info that leaders need to succeed, and for the
employees same key things that will help them to be better team players.
