Peer Assistant Leader
Position Description
PALs are well trained student leaders who assist in the transition and adjustment of first year students to
the academic and social life at UNH Manchester. They serve as a first year student’s coach, resource, and
most of all, mentor. They have a multitude of tasks that include assisting with Orientation, Stepping
Stones, staffing the Student Development desk and primarily, mentoring 10-18 new students in a First
Year Seminar class as they cofacilitate a section of UMST 401. While PALs ultimately report to the
Director of Student Development, the PAL works with a designated instructor in the delivery of the First
Year Seminar as well as within a team lead by a Peer Associate Leader.
PALs:
 Serve as a role model of positive behavior, representing UNH at Manchester with pride and respect
 Serve as an advocate for the interests, needs, and rights of students
 Help students adjust and become academically successful
 Serve as a mentor for academic, co-curricular, and leadership involvement
 Serve as a readily accessible source of information for new students
 Initiate outreach in response to academic and social integration needs
 Respond to advisee co-curricular interests by encouraging participation in involvement opportunities
 Design, plan and implement workshops and social events geared to first year student interests
 Work collaboratively and support appropriate college personnel (e.g. faculty, peer tutors, academic
counselors, and faculty advisors)
 Maintain confidentiality of students and maintain appropriate relationships
 Cofacilitate a section of UMST 401 to serve as a peer resource in the classroom
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
• Minimum sophomore status (12 completed credits at the time of application)
• Cumulative GPA of 2.7 and above preferred
• Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
• Personal time/schedule flexibility to meet position requirements
• Successful completion of training, and on-going development
• Completion of UMST525: Exploring Leadership before or during the spring 2016 semester with a Bor better.
• Appointment to this position is a yearlong commitment, with enrollment in UMST 525 in March
2016, training dates in May, June and August through May 2017. A training schedule will be made
available in February.
COMPENSATION
 A paid position, starting at $8/hr (candidate), increased to $9/hr upon training completion.
 Requires 6-8 hrs/wk. for the fall semester and up to 6 hrs./wk. for the spring semester.
