ROLE DESCRIPTION:
LTA COUNCILLOR (nominated by the Tennis Foundation) –
Higher Education
ABOUT THE TENNIS FOUNDATION
The Tennis Foundation is Great Britain’s leading tennis charity and our vision is to build a sport
which is inclusive and accessible to every kind of community. Our aim is to provide opportunities to
encourage more people to maximise their potential through the sport. We work closely with the
Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and a wide range of partners from across all sectors to deliver our
vision and aim.
The Tennis Foundation works across three main charitable areas: in education, with disabled
people and with disadvantaged communities. We also fund work managed by the LTA in coaching,
the delivery of competitions and general tennis development across Great Britain. Put simply, we
provide a combination of funding, tennis equipment, training and advice to individuals and
organisations to make tennis accessible to all.
The Foundation is a charitable company limited by guarantee. We have the general objective to
promote all purposes recognised as charitable through the association with tennis; the Foundation
is directly responsible for the education and disability programmes, on behalf of the LTA, and
supports the delivery of community tennis activities more broadly.
The Foundation has been given the responsibility to recruit and nominate up to eight people to the
LTA Council who have expertise in certain areas of sports development. The Foundation intends
to nominate a new Higher Education representative, to become an LTA Councillor and sit on the
Lawn Tennis Association Limited’s Council (the forum representing those bodies which are
members of Lawn Tennis Association Limited). The LTA Council is an important consultative body
on the strategy of British tennis, and meets up to four times a year. There is an Annual General
Meeting which is held in London. In addition, there would be an opportunity to be nominated to
become a member of various LTA committees, which meet on a regular basis during the year.
ABOUT THE LTA
The Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) mission is to get more people playing tennis more often, and
its role is to develop, promote and govern tennis in Britain. The LTA’s purpose is to enrich lives
through tennis. Our new values are Teamwork, Integrity, Passion and Excellence which underpin
everything that we do.
As with all National Governing Bodies, it also plays an important role in increasing the governance
of the sport, ensuring the regulatory framework in appropriate and championing the game’s core
values of fair play, enjoyment and respect.
ROLE
Following an award-winning programme in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA)
offering support, advice, funding and free equipment to schools, colleges and universities over the
past five years, Tennis in Education (managed by the Foundation) is now a key part of the wider
British Tennis Strategy.
Existing programmes will be strengthened while the Tennis Foundation is now looking more closely
at the off court benefits tennis brings to young people, including increased confidence, improved

attendance and higher academic achievement, in addition to the health benefits that come from
playing the sport.
This strategy is underpinned by the following objectives:
1. To develop the physical literacy of young children, by offering programmes that provide
positive, early experiences of sport through tennis.
2. To retain the interest of teenagers in sport with new offers that provide tennis in innovative
and relevant formats, and develops links with parks, clubs and other community venues.
3. To use tennis as a vehicle to help develop further and higher education students’ skills and
improve their employability and work-readiness.
4. To champion the power of sport to deliver social change by supporting young people from
disadvantaged areas in their personal development via a mentoring programme.
