Job purpose
To develop and conduct internationally leading research in the broad area of inorganic, structural and/or
materials chemistry.
To contribute to the development of, and make major use of, the synchrotron research facility at Diamond
Light Source (DLS), Didcot, Oxfordshire;
To supervise and train research staff and students and to enhance the research reputations of the University
of Southampton (UoS) and Diamond Light Source;
To facilitate other strategic interactions between research groups in Southampton and Diamond Light
Source;
To secure substantial research funding from diverse sources;
To contribute strongly to the UG and PG teaching programme at the University of Southampton in the area
of Inorganic/Materials Chemistry and occasional teaching/outreach at Diamond Light Source.
To undertake leadership, management and engagement activities consistent with the strategic aims of the
UoS and Diamond.

To establish a distinctive, internationally-leading research group with activity both in
Chemistry at the University of Southampton and at Diamond. This will include:
Raising research funding by developing innovative research proposals, projects and
funding bids as self-contained items or as part of a broader programme;
Carrying out management and administrative tasks associated with specified research
funding, including risk assessment of project activities, organisation of project meetings
and documentation and preparation of annual reports;
Training research students and post-doctoral workers;
Disseminating the research results through presentations at international and national
conferences and through publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals.

To develop skills in UG and PG teaching and hence to contribute to the education

programmes within Chemistry e.g. through preparation & delivery of high quality lectures
broadly in inorganic chemistry, workshops/tutorials, laboratory/project supervisions at
UG/PG level as appropriate; contribution to the promotion of science, e.g. through open
days, science days, UCAS visits etc. Similarly, to undertake occasional teaching on
synchrotron techniques and topics to support CDT programmes or other at Diamond.

To contribute at an appropriate level to the efficient management and administration of
the Academic Unit by performing personal administrative duties as allocated by the Head
and by taking on appropriate Academic Unit coordination roles; and including facilitating
other strategic interactions between research groups in Southampton and Diamond Light
Source.

Internal and external relationships
Member of the Academic Unit Board, Examination Board and of such Academic Unit committees relevant to
their administrative duties.
New appointees at the University of Southampton are assigned a senior colleague to guide their
development and aid their integration into the Academic Unit, Faculty and University. Similarly, a mentor will
also be assigned through Diamond.
Research priorities will be agreed with the Head of Research (Line Manager) and in consultation with the
Physical Sciences Director, Diamond Light Source.
Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Head of Teaching (Inorganic), within the context
of the teaching programmes agreed by the Academic Unit Education and Qualifications Committee.
Special Requirements
To be available to lead and undertake a significant level of research activity located both in Southampton
and at the Diamond Light Source (Didcot, Oxfordshire). Note that it is expected that the successful
candidate will be based predominantly at Diamond for the first 2 years after appointment, and this will
subsequently adjust to approximately equal time at the two sites.
The candidate will be required to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practise (PCAP) over the
course of the first 5 years from the date of their appointment, or possess an equivalent qualification
suitable for Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
