Motion: The faculty at Winston Salem State University vote to adopt the general education framework on the next page with the understanding that implementation will be developed over AY2011-2012 with full implementation completed on or before August 15, 2012.

Some processes and procedures that need to be addressed before we achieve fullimplementation:

1.

Implementation of Advising Model to support freshmen and sophomore students (AY

2011-2012)

2.

Creation of supporting documents (Phase One: Catalog Updates separating major program requirements from general education requirements, Advising Manual- Summer

2011; Phase Two: Guide to Liberal Education, Charting Your Career, Catalog

Improvements and Updates-Spring, 2012)

3.

Training for faculty and professional advisors to include expectations, roles and responsibilities (Ongoing beginning May, 2011)

4.

Degree Audit in BANNER to track student progress based upon the new framework

(Summer 2011)

5.

Rules and processes for students under past Catalogs and transfer students (Ongoing towards policy statements to Board of Trustees March, 2012)

6.

Transitioning major programs of study into 60-60 model and creating exceptions where dictated by accreditation demands. (Ongoing with all programs transitioned to the new framework by June, 2012)

7.

Standardize the process for creating courses based upon the learning outcomes:

Delineate core objectives, activities and types of assessments required for courses by learning outcome focus (e.g. what are the standard practices expected in a course focused on critical thinking regardless of content area. (Ongoing to be completed by

December, 2011)

8.

Standardize the process for creating courses based upon the areas of knowledge:

Delineate content focus required for courses by learning outcome focus (e.g. what are the required content goals in a course focused on social science, regardless of learning outcome. (Ongoing to be completed by March, 2012)

9.

Standardize the process for evaluating courses based upon the affective domains:

Delineate content focus required for courses by affective domain (e.g. what are the required content goals in a course focused on globalization, regardless of learning outcome or area of study. (Ongoing to be completed by May, 2012)

10.

Create a communication strategy to inform students (current and prospective) and families about the liberal arts approach to general education at WSSU (Ongoing beginning with new student orientation Summer 2011)
