A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF HALLANDALE BEACH, FLORIDA, TO SUPPORT
THE OPPOSITION OF THE BEAR HUNT IN FLORIDA; AND
PROVIDING AND EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, Ron Bergeron of Fort Lauderdale was first appointed to a five (5) year term
9
on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in August 2007 and is now serving his
10
second term, after being reappointed in March 2013; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Bergeron, an engineering contractor, is president and owner
of Bergeron Family of Companies, based in Fort Lauderdale; and

WHEREAS, saving the Everglades and protecting wildlife have been Commissioner
Bergeron’s lifelong passions; and

WHEREAS, for the past ten (10) years, Commissioner Bergeron has worked with the
19
Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District with value engineering and
20
analyzing costs versus benefits of restoration projects; and

WHEREAS, in 2015 the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FFWC) adopted a Bear
23
Management Plan Rule which includes a bear hunt for the purposes of controlling the number of
24
bears in certain areas called Bear Management Units; and
25

WHEREAS, the recently concluded bear hunt and all future bear hunts will serve to thwart
27
and undo the efforts of the FFWC and others to promote this previously endangered species; and

WHEREAS, the City of Hallandale Beach would like to commend Florida Fish and Wildlife
30
Commissioner (“FFWC”) Ron Bergeron for taking the lone stance in opposing the bear hunt in
31
Florida; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission hereby oppose the efforts of the FFWC and
34
encourage Governor Rick Scott to take all necessary steps to prohibit any future bear hunts; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission have determined that the residents and
public to oppose the bear hunt in Florida and prohibit any future bear hunts.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF HALLANDALE BEACH, FLORIDA:

SECTION 1. Opposing Bear Hunts in Florida. The Mayor and City Commission of the
43
City of Hallandale Beach opposing the bear hunt and encourage Commissioner Bergeron and
44
Governor Rick Scott to oppose all bear hunts in the future.

SECTION 2. Directions to City Manager. The Mayor and City Commission direct the
City Manager to cause a copy of this resolution to be forwarded to all appropriate parties.
SECTION 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its
passage and adoption.
