She has worked for the Oxford University Library Services since 2001 where she is currently the IT Development Manager & Strategy Coordinator. Frances has been involved in numerous digital preservation initiatives and projects including; SHERPA, Preserv, & Preserv2 and the Oxford Mass Digitisation project. Frances holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and a Masters in Information Studies from the University of London. HILDELIES BALK Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB)- National library of the Netherlands Hildelies Balk studeerde kunstgeschiedenis in Utrecht en promoveerde in 2004 aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam op het proefschrift De Kunstpaus. H.P.Bremmer 1871-1956. Zij publiceert geregeld over kunst en particulier verzamelen en werkte als tentoonstellingsmaker voor verschillende musea. Sinds 2005 is zij hoofd collectie en presentatie van Museum de Fundatie in Heino en Zwolle. LUCIE BURGESS Head of Strategy and Planning, the British Library, UK Lucie has assumed the role of Head of Strategy and Planning at the British Library in February 2007. Previously she acted as Head of Development for the Built Environment division of CMP information, part of the FTSE-250 media and business information company United Business Media plc. There she managed strategic digital initiatives, mergers and acquisitions, and new product development. Lucie worked at CMP for six years where she published six magazines and associated web sites. She was also Business Development Manager for the company, managing the annual strategic review process, operational projects and key strategic developments. JEAN-PIERRE CHANOD Document Structure Area Manager, XRCE Jean-Pierre joined the Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) in 1993. He held positions as Area Manager for Parsing & Semantics and Senior Scientist and now works as Document Structure Area Manager. Jean-Pierre’s main research interests are in natural language and document content processing, with topics ranging from morphology to robust parsing, semantics, and conversion to XML. He has been involved in a number of international research collaborations in Europe and Asia, especially for the development of multilingual resources. He contributed to a number of French national projects and EUfunded projects such as TwentyOne, Elsnet, Elsnet-Goes-East, STEEL, and currently the integrated project VIKEF. Before joining XRCE, Jean-Pierre was project leader at the IBM Paris scientific centre where he actively contributed to the PLNLP project. Jean-Pierre Chanod graduated from Ecole normale supérieure in mathematics in 1980. LEE DIRKS Director of Scholarly Communication, Technical Computing, Microsoft Lee Dirks is the director of Scholarly Communications for Microsoft's Technical Computing Initiative, where he manages research programs related to open access to research data, interoperability of archives and repositories and the preservation of digital information. Lee holds an MLIS degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, as well as a post-masters degree in Preservation Administration from Columbia University. In addition to positions at Columbia and then with OCLC (Preservation Resources), Lee has held a variety of roles at Microsoft since joining in 1996. EILEEN FENTON Executive Director, Portico, http://www.portico.org/about/ Eileen Fenton heads Portico, a nonprofit electronic archiving service for electronic journals and other scholarly resources. Portico (www.portico.org) began as the Electronic-Archiving Initiative in 2002 and was launched as Portico in 2005 with initial support provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, JSTOR and the Library of Congress. Eileen was Executive Director of the Electronic-Archiving Initiative and before that the Director of Production at JSTOR. Portico is developing technical infrastructure and an economically sustainable business model for a continuing archiving service for scholarly resources published in electronic form, beginning with electronic scholarly journals. Portico is a partner in the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program. MARC FRESKO EDM & ERM Consulting Services Director Cornwell Management Consultants plc Marc Fresko is EDM & ERM Consulting Services Director at Cornwell Management Consultants plc, an independent consultancy. He has provided consultancy and advice since 1979, specialising since 1992 solely on electronic document management and records management (EDRM). He is recognised as an authority on EDRM, and advises clients throughout the UK and in other countries. He contributed significantly to the de facto standard for EDRM in the public sector, the Functional Requirements for ERMS published by The National Archives (then the Public Record Office); and was the project leader and architect of the European Commission s MoReq Specification (Model Requirements for ERMS). He is now leading the MoReq2 development project. DIDIER GIRAUD Institute National de l’Audiovisual, France Didier Giraud graduated from the Audio Visual University of Valenciennes in 1981. After joining the Archives Direction of INA in 1982, he starts working as part of the technical staff of the technical division. Technical manager from 1987 to 1992 of the digital audiovisual technical unit, he was mainly involved in the restoration domain, dealing with video and film materials. With the generalisation of digital audiovisual tools in 1992, he extends his knowledge to TV production and post-production, using Compositing and managing 3D tools within digital video suites. Didier was the technical manager of the IMAGINA event, forum for Computer Graphics Images, coorganised by the Festival du Film de Monte Carlo and INA, from 1990 to 2000. He is now involved in strategy development for INA's Research and Experimentation Department. Didier graduated from the École supérieure d'ingénieurs en électronique (ESIEE), where he obtained a Master in Competitive and Strategic Intelligence in 2000. MATTHIAS HEMMJE Professor, University of Hagen, Germany Matthias is full Professor of Computer Science, Chair for Multimedia and Internet Applications, at the University of Hagen. His primary research interests include information retrieval, multimedia databases, virtual environments, information visualization, visual interaction, and multimedia. He also leads research in the area of content engineering and knowledge technologies as well as evaluation of interactive systems. Matthias is a member of the Visual Information Retrieval Interfaces (VIRI) working group founded by Bob Korfhage at the Univ. of Pittsburgh and a member of the European working group on Foundations of Advanced 3D Information Visualization (FADIVA). He has been actively involved as an expert on scientific research and development projects, both nationally and internationally, and a consultant at national and European discussions of various research programmes related to his area of expertise. ROSS KING Austrian Research Centre GmbH (ARC) Ross King studierte an der Stanford Universität und hat sein Doktorat im Bereich Hochenergiephysik. 1995 kam er nach Wienund arbeitete einige Jahren an der Österreichische Akademie derWissenschaften. Danach wechselte er zum IT-Sektor und 2002 war er der erste Mitarbeiter bei dem ARC Research Studio Digital Memory Engineering. HELEEN KIST Managing Director, Skillcast, http://www.skillcast.co.uk/ In 2001 Heleen set up Skillcast, a niche strategy consultancy specializing in growing knowledge economies. Skillcast assists SMEs with creation, funding and business development or large organizations with setting up new ventures. It also advises public bodies on innovation policy, commercialization structure, and funding. Helen has a substantial blue chip and international experience. She was a venture capitalist in a small London based Internet incubator. She has been involved in resolving board level issues as engagement manager at McKinsey &Company, working in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Sweden, Italy, and France. She also has an understanding of product development, marketing, and product launches in Europe and Eastern Europe from her employment with Procter & Gamble in Brussels. Heleen has a MS in Chemistry from Leiden University in the Netherlands and an MS in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University. At Stanford she co-founded the Stanford technology Ventures Program, accelerating entrepreneurship education among engineers, and co-wrote ”The Characteristics of the Entrepreneur“ (with T. Byers and R. Sutton), Technology Management Handbook, ed. C. Dorff, CRC Press 1998. JACK LANG Entrepreneur, Cambridge, United Kingdom Jack Lang is a serial entrepreneur and business angel, and Cofounder of Artimi Ltd, which makes ultra wide band wireless chips. Interested in “computer science and how the brain works”, his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Sciences at Cambridge led to a Computer Science diploma and a work as a Demonstrator in the Computer Laboratory. He left the University to found the consulting company Topexpress, one of whose projects was designing some of the software for the BBC Microcomputer. Jack was founder of Netchannel Ltd, which was acquired in 1998 by ntl, where he became Chief Technologist. Before that he founded Electronic Share Information Ltd, acquired by E*Trade Inc in 1995. He is author of The High Tech Entrepreneurs Handbook and teaches and examines courses in Business Studies, Entrepreneurship and Ecommerce for the University of Cambridge Computer Science Laboratory. He is Entrepreneur in Residence at the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at Judge Business School in Cambridge. JULIEN MASANÈS Director of the European Archive Foundation, Amsterdam, Netherlands http://europarchive.org/ Julien Masanè is the co-founder and the director of the European Archive Foundation for preservation of the Internet and digital content. Incorporated in 2004 in Amsterdam, as a non-profit foundation, the European Archive acts as a technological partner for cultural institutions to foster free online access of European cultural heritage and develops an open Web archive. Previously, Julien was in charge of the Web Archive project at the French National Library. He actively participated in the creation of the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) and coordinated its work for the first 2 years. Julien has been involved in various international initiatives for digital preservation, such as the European project NEDLIB and the Global Digital Format Registry. He has also initiated and presided the International Web Archiving Workshop (IWAW), the main conference in the area of Internet preservation. WILLIAN (BILL) ROBERTS Associate Director, Tessella, Den Haag, Netherlands http://www.tessella.com Bill is Associate Director working for Tessella in the Netherlands. Bill worked on the Dutch government Digital Preservation Testbed project. He was responsible for design and development of various software systems to support the work of the Testbed, as well as providing advice on IT related issues. Tessella has been working with government and private sector organizations to develop solutions to the problems of digital preservation. They have been actively researching innovative strategies to ensure that digital information can survive reliably as hardware and software technologies come and go. Tessella is a partner on the PLANETS project. Organizers: ADAM FARQUHAR Head of Architecture, The British Library, UK As Head of Architecture at the British Library, Adam is developing and managing the Library's enterprise architecture. He and his team lead several advanced technology development projects in the Digital Library and Digital Preservation areas. Adam co-founded the Library's Digital Preservation Team and serves as Scientific Director for the Planets Digital Preservation Project. This EU co-funded project has a 15m euro budget over four years. Partners include national libraries, national archives, Universities, Microsoft, IBM, Tessella, and ARC. More information at http://www.planets-project.eu/. NATASA MILIC-FRAYLING Senior Researcher, Microsoft Research Ltd., Cambridge, UK Natasa joined Microsoft Research Cambridge, UK in 1998. She has been setting research directions for the Integrated Systems group. Her interests include design and evaluation of information retrieval systems, machine learning methods for text, user centred design of information management systems, and technologies for cross-platform and context rich communication. Since October 2004, Natasa has been heading the Research Partnership Programme that facilitates collaboration between researchers and Microsoft teams in MS Subsidiaries across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Natasa is actively involved with a wider research and academic community. She is leading MSR participation in the PLANETS project and coordinating development of tools for preservation of Office documents. CARLOS OLIVEIRA European Commission Carlos Oliveira is Deputy Head of Unit at INFSO E3 – Cultural Heritage and Technology-enhanced Learning. This unit is part of Digital Content and Cognitive Systems Directorate within Directorate General Information Society and Media of the European Commission (EC). In his post Carlos is responsible for the coordination of EC-funded research and development activities in the areas of digital cultural heritage and digital preservation. These activities are part of the Information and Communication Technologies theme European Union's 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development. Carlos is the Project Officer for PLANETS. Previously, he held several positions at the EC, notably as project officer in charge of the follow-up and coordination of R&D projects in technology enhanced learning. Before joining the Commission, Carlos was a member of the management consulting team of Coopers and Lybrand in Portugal and Director at IN Software, a software development company and subsidiary of Radio Marconi (currently part of Portugal Telecom). Carlos graduated in Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering at Technical University of Lisbon (Instituto Superior Técnico) in 1986 and received a Master’s in Computer Engineering from this university in 1998. He also received a Master's in Public Policy and Administration at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005.
