work relationships you have with co-workers and supervisors. Attend this
hands-on opportunity to: (1) recognize how communication and behavior
impacts workplace civility and morale, accept responsibility for personal
behavior, and learn techniques for having crucial conversations with your
colleagues to resolve conflict or challenging moments. This workshop was

Brain Research and Student Learning
Michelle Francis, Molly Shrey, Sally Aitken and Anne Marie Wassenbauer
The first rule of brain research... No brain likes a lecture! Come ready to
engage and chat about that gray matter between our ears. We will answer
questions like: What does your brain do when it learns? How does the new
research on your brain change the way we learn and educate others? This
engaging and FUN workshop will outline five research tips to help you
understand your brain at a richer, more complex level.
Location: Fox 120
Success from the Start: Student-Centered Strategies for Day 1 and
Beyond
Jill Buettner-Ouellette, Faun Maddux, Leslie Saito-Liu, Melissa Salcido and
Ross Smith
Whether you’re a relatively new instructor or someone who is considering
retirement in the next few years, this session is designed to provide some
strategies for making the first day of class something different than just the
old “take roll-review the syllabus” class meeting. You’ll be asked to
participate in various activities that can be adapted for your own use on day
1 or later in the semester for exam preparation in order to help students be
more actively responsible for their own success. Come ready to think, share,
move around, and approach the start of the semester with an energized
perspective!
Location: Fox 107
Acceleration and Student Success
Tina Golaw, Nicole Cuttler and Whitney Clay
In this interactive session, engage with colleagues to expand your thinking
about how students learn. Learn what Acceleration means and see local
data, demonstrating increased success rates in Accelerated
courses. Consider this WVC data: Of the degree and transfer-seeking
students who placed in developmental English or Math in 2006, only 47%
attained a degree, certificate, or transfer by 2012. How can Acceleration
increase student success? Its principles include minimizing exit points,
providing opportunities for early success through active learning, and using
increased rigor to prepare students for transfer-level courses. Come learn
how this is happening at WVC!

Practicing Crucial Conversations-Workshop Level II
Michelle Donohue Mendoza
We will review the “under the waterline” behaviors that foster incivility and
low morale in the work environment. Develop tools that facilitate civil and
respectful communication by addressing ways to handle abrasive
communication. Learn techniques to become an action and results-oriented
communicator with your colleagues and supervisor. These abilities will
enhance your success in any work environment by helping you become more
open and responsive to opposing points of view, improving your abilities to
relate to others, and learning to traverse conflict, controversy, and power
dynamics without avoidance. Practice with real scenarios-Reality TV-West
Valley College style!
