Coordinator, Shared Research Facility
Essential Function: Light Work
Description: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force
frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Light work requires walking
or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling.

The Coordinator, Shared Research Facility (SRF) is responsible for developing the University of
Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) Shared Research Facility (SRF) and coordinating the efforts of the
institution’s Core Laboratories (CL) and High Performance Computing Facility (HPC) in order to
provide a competitive research infrastructure for faculty, staff, and students to excel in their
research, creative, scholarly, and entrepreneurial endeavors. The Coordinator works
collaboratively with faculty and laboratory managers to coordinate the use of the SRF, CL, and
HPC by UNR’s faculty, staff, and students as well as local, regional, and national industries,
universities, and research organizations.

60% - Shared Research Facility, Core Laboratories, and High Performance Computing
Facility Management
 Establish and continually develop the University’s Shared Research Facility
 Manage the SRF, CL, and HPC’s resources
 Maintain a competitive research infrastructure that will enable the University’s faculty,
staff, and students to excel in their research, creative, scholarly, and entrepreneurial
endeavors
 Assist with the procurement of new equipment and supplies for the SRF, CL, and HPC;
maintain inventory; manage the control, movement, and dispensing of supplies
 Create SRF, CL, and HPC maintenance schedule; coordinate maintenance and repair
efforts
 Develop and implement management, operating, safety, and sustainability plans for the
SRF, CL, and HPC
 Work with the VPRI and the AVPR to enhance the research and academic safety culture
at the University

Work with Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) to ensure compliance with
environmental health, safety, and waste management requirements; participate in the
resolution of audit findings
20% - Scheduling and Billing Administration
 Procure, implement, maintain, and modify scheduling and billing systems
 Provide training in the use of scheduling and billing systems
 Prepare and maintain SRF, CL, and HPC budgets
 Work with the Director, Nevada Center for Applied Research (NCAR) to establish
recharge rates for the SRF, CL, and HPC
15% - Coordination and Leadership
 Work closely with SRF, CL, and HPC faculty and laboratory managers to determine and
address facility capabilities and needs
 Coordinate use of SRF, CL, and HPC by internal and external users
 Oversee day-to-day activities of faculty, staff, students and industry members utilizing
the SRF, CL, and HPC
 Organize and/or provide training regarding chemical and laboratory safety protocols and
proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies
 Work with key faculty and managers of the SRF, CL, and HPC to develop and design
experimental procedures and equipment configurations
5% - Special Projects
 Complete special projects as assigned by the VPRI, AVP-R, AVP-EI, and Director,
NCAR

The Coordinator, Shared Research Facility works independently with minimal oversight to
coordinate the operations of the University’s Shared Research Facility, Core Laboratories, and
High Performance Computing Facility. The incumbent has the ability to develop scheduling and
billing systems for use by local and regional industries as well as has the authority to create and
implement operating, safety, and sustainability plans for the SRF, CL, and HPC.

takes to the supervisor for resolution and/or consultation. Provide examples. If a line of
progression, describe the supervisory consultation at the highest level.
The Coordinator, Shared Research Facility works closely with the Director, Nevada Center for
Applied Research (NCAR) and the Associate Vice President for Research to establish goals
relating to the operations of the University’s SRF, CL, and HPC. Major purchases and changes
to the fee structure or scheduling of the SRF, CL, and HPC must first be discussed with the
Director, NCAR prior to implementation. Resource allocation issues that cannot be immediately
addressed by the Coordinator must also be brought to the Director’s attention for further
resolution.
