The EBS Schloss campus is housed in the former Schloss Reichartshausen, built from 17371740 in the vineyards that stretch along the Rhine River between Hattenheim and Oestrich.
Wine production in this area dates back to Roman times. Emperor Charles the Great is
believed to have been the first to have planted vines here. The wine culture has heavily
influenced the economy, landscape, architecture and traditions of the Rheingau region. Monks
constructed monasteries and produced wine, transporting it on their own ships in the lucrative
trade along the Rhine River. The Cistercian monastery at Eberbach is one of the most famous
and best preserved monasteries in the region, from which its monks ran a prosperous wine
business dating to the Middle Ages. The Rheingauer, as the people in this region are known,
live from and for the wine, which has formed and shaped their way of life for centuries.
The unique climate, steep hills sheltered by the neighbouring Taunus mountain range and the
shale soils provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of the Riesling and Spätburgunder (pinot
noir) grapes. Both require warmth, but not intense heat, to thrive. Of the 3,000 hectares of
vineyards under cultivation, Riesling accounts for 84% and pinot noir for 11% of the total.
In addition to the many family-operated vineyards and restaurants, castles, fortresses, and
wine estates are scattered throughout the five Rheingau towns of Eltville, Oestrich-Winkel,
Geisenheim, Rüdesheim and Lorch, as well as in the communities of Walluf and Kiedrich.
Many of them have been painstakingly restored and host festivals, concerts and events
throughout the year.

There is a wide range of accommodation options from which to choose in the Rheingau region,
although with the exception of the five-star superior Hotel Kempinski Schloss Reinhartshausen
(not to be confused with the EBS Schloss Reichartshausen), there are no international chain
hotels in the immediate area.
Many hotels have been extensively renovated and remodelled to combine traditional features
with modern comforts and trendy touches. A few have fully retained the old-world feeling and
style (and in a few cases, unfortunately, the comfort) of earlier times.
