GUS&GUS
‘hommage’
The duo Maris and Bettens perform an idiosyncratic homage to two almost forgotten jazz pioneers
of 'les petites belges': together with accordionist Gus Viseur, trumpeter Gus Deloof created a furore
on the Parisian music scene in the 1930s. You can expect a new approach to original pieces, a quirky
perspective, and a great deal of their own material in which improvisation prevails and the unique
colour of dialogue between both of these wind instruments is put into the spotlight.

THURSDAY 10 JULY 2014
MAIN STAGE
Manu Katché – Richard Bona – Eric Legnini – Stefano Di Battista
Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Hour: 10.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Stefano Di Battista (saxophone), Eric Legnini (piano), Richard Bona (bass, vocals), Manu
Katché (drums)
The quartet Manu Katché – Richard Bona – Eric Legnini – Stefano Di Battista unites four mighty
figures from the contemporary jazz scene with highly diverse cultural baggage. These four virtuosos
last year won over the crowd as an all-star band at Jazz à Marciac. In fact, it went so well that they
are this summer embarking on a world tour, exclusively for the IJFO (International Jazz Festival
Organization).
This means that in Belgium, your only opportunity to see this quartet this summer is at the Gent
Jazz Festival.
The Italian Di Battista fires out intense phrases from his saxophone, over the delectable piano
playing of Belgium’s Eric Legnini. Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona tags on rather extraordinary –
even eccentric – vocals, while French drummer Manu Katché whips up the quartet further.

Bobby McFerrin: Spirityouall
Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Hour: 8.10 PM
Location: Main Stage
Bobby McFerrin achieved a worldwide hit at the end of the 80s with ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’.
Rather than living off that success, he instead chose to explore new musical terrains and to develop
his voice. McFerrin boasts an incredible vocal palette and technique with which he shines in all kinds
of styles, whether it’s jazz, blues, classical, R’n’B, African folk music of pop; and the way he
amalgamates harmony, rhythm and melody as a vocalist is nothing short of breathtaking. Time and
again, his uniquely amazing voice, appearance and smile help you forget about your worries, and
simply make you ‘happy’.
On Spirityouall, McFerrin above all presents spirituals and songs that had their origin in the African
American slave communities in the US. These are songs with stories about freedom, courage, being
human, the pioneer spirit and the path toward a better society. What he aimed for was a bluesy,
feel-good recording.
The choice of the old-style American spiritual and his own songs in the same style provide McFerrin
with a musical framework within which he, surrounded by outstanding musicians, succeeds in
exploiting every facet of his vocal art, as well as his talent for improvisation.

Kellylee Evans
Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Hour 6.00 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Kellylee Evans (vocals), Raphaël Debacker (piano), Eric Löhrer (guitar), Sylvain Romano
(bass), Fabrice Moreau (drums)
Canadian Kellylee Evans had her international breakthrough with the album ‘Nina’, a homage to
Nina Simone, in 2011. She was picked up by the prestigious record label Verve/Universal, and with
its support has continued her ascent. With her sensual voice and captivating songs, she fluctuates
between jazz and soul, between Lizz Wright and Erykah Badu. On stage she is a charismatic
performer, who exudes joie de vivre.
Her most recent album ‘I Remember When’ is a recording she made with the help of Eric Legnini.
She projects tracks from artists such as Eminem, John Legend and Kanye West into her own world of
jazz, soul and hip-hop, employing various samples in order to create original songs. There’s no doubt
that this summer she’ll bound to hook you with her special version of Stromae’s ‘Alors on Danse’,
which she changed to ‘And So We Dance’.

LABtrio
Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Hour: 4.00 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Bram De Looze (piano), Anneleen Boehme (bass), Lander Gyselinck (drums)
Their album Fluxus proved to be one of the best of 2013. This is why LABtrio is returning to Gent Jazz
Festival, following last year’s highly acclaimed performances on the Garden Stage. Pianist Bram De
Looze, drummer Lander Gyselinck and bassist Anneleen Boehme make up a trio that has its roots in
the jazz tradition, and adds generous helpings of contemporary music. Hip hop, ethnic, classical and
underground music also permeate their work.
They amalgamated the first letters of their first names, and immediately had a name that reflects
what they stand for: a trio that doesn’t shy away from laboratory work and experimentation. LABtrio
performs standards but above all idiosyncratic improvisations.

GARDEN STAGE
Black Flower
Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Hour: 00.00 AM
Location: Garden Stage
Line-up: Nathan Daems (alto-, baritone saxophone, flute, melodica, vocals), Jon Birdsong
(cornet), Simon Segers (drums), Filip Vandebril (bass), Wouter Haest (organ, clavinet)
Black Flower is closing act on the Garden Stage on 10, 11, 12 and 13 July.
With Black Flower, saxophonist Nathan Daems has brought about a remarkable band that creates an
exotic sound, combined with sensual melodies and a melancholic sensation. The result is soulful
music with an eccentric twist, as well as a psychedelic charge. It is at the same time celebratory
music, with powerful rhythms and solid sounds.
Daems was occupied with world music in his teens, and was then drawn to jazz through studying
music. Following his studies, the jazz remained and the world music surfaced once again. Daems
draws influence for Black Flower in the legendary Mulatu Astatke, Getatchew Mekurya and Fela
Kuti; as well as in Ethiopian jazz, afro-beat, Eastern and blues music. Their debut album is due out in
April 2014.

Zara McFarlane
Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Hour: 5.20 PM & 7.20 PM & 9.50 PM
Location: Garden Stage
Line-up: Zara McFarlane (vocals), Peter Edwards (piano), Binker Golding (tenor saxophone), Max
Luthert (contrabass), Andy Chapman (drums)
We last year sowed the first seeds for the Garden Stage, which has now gained a prominent place
and from this year on will be used to its fullest for live music. This means we’re able to present an
even greater number of talented groups on stage. Zara McFarlane is our first guest. She will be
performing three sets, at 5.20 PM, 7.20 PM and 9.50 PM.
Zara McFarlane counts as one of the most promising figures in the British jazz scene. In 2012 she was
one of the revelations at Jazz Middelheim and in 2013 she lived up to the high expectations in the
Gent Jazz Club.
She is adored by jazz fans and soul lovers and has the full support of Gilles Peterson. Even though
she had a jazz training and her roots lie in the jazz tradition, she also spans the genres, which is why
she is compared to singers like Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson and even Jill Scot.
She comes to the Gent Jazz Festival with the songs of the new album If You Knew Her. With her
beautiful voice, tons of soul and a charming smile we are all set for a great show.

Hour: 3.00 PM
Location: Garden Stage
Line-up: Thijs Troch (piano), Nils Vermeulen (bass), Bert Minnaert (drums)

dives into waves of contemporary jazz, and drifts away on a group sound that answers their own
needs.

FRIDAY 11 JULY 2014
MAIN STAGE
Ibrahim Maalouf ‘Illusions’
Date: Friday 11 July 2014
Hour: 10.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Laurent David (bass), Xavier Rogé (drums), Frank Woeste (piano,
keyboards), François Delporte (guitar), Youenne Le Cam (biniou, flute, trumpet), Yann Martin
(trumpet), Martin Saccardy (trumpet)
French trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, of Lebanese descent, fled Lebanon at a young age and his family
settled in Paris. His father Nassim Maalouf, also a trumpeter, instilled in him a love of music.
Maalouf’s music teeters on the edge between various genres, from jazz to rock, classical to pop. He
two years ago released the fantastic album Wind, on which he combined jazz with Eastern
influences. With the follow-up to that album, entitled Illusions, he once again amazes, and moves in
an entirely different direction. He purposefully seeks out to experiment with rock, soul, funk and
fusion. An eclectic mix of styles, which Maalouf manages to forge brilliantly into a unified whole.
The line-up of this band is characterised by a true ‘wall of sound’ of four trumpets. These include
Maalouf’s distinctive quarter-tone trumpet, whereby a valve of the classical trumpet was converted
so as to obtain that singular Eastern sound.
Illusions stands for deception, for the distorted way in which we view things.

Hour: 8.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Tom Barman (voice& lyrics), Robin Verheyen (composition & saxophones), Nicolas Thys
(bass), Antoine Pierre (drums)
TaxiWars is the result of a rebellious and intensive collaboration between dEUS frontman Tom
Barman and Belgian saxphonist Robin Verheyen. TaxiWars is what came into being following a clash
of loose ideas and jamming sessions. JazzNotJazz, Spoken Word, Songs, Rap, Parlando, you name it.

Tigran – Shadow Theater
Date: Friday 11 July 2014
Hour: 6.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Tigran Hamasyan (piano), Areni Agbabian (vocals), Charles Altura (guitar), Sam
Minaie (bass), Arthur Hnatek (drums)
“A-may-zing!” “A mature, great, rich and deep artist.” Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea didn’t shy
away from superlatives when praising Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan. In 2006 he won the
Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition, and the year 2011 signified his major breakthrough with
the album A Fable. Last year he excelled once again as artist in residence during Jazz Middelheim,
and at the end of last year his album Shadow Theater was released. On that album he blends
atmospheric punk jazz with the rich folklore of Armenia. He is coming to Ghent with a quintet, in
which the clear and moving voice of singer Areni Agbabian plays a major part. He and Areni both
share Armenian roots.
Last summer at Jazz Middelheim he performed in various contexts. First with trumpeter Arve
Hendriksen and Jan Bang, in a concert strongly coloured by Scandinavian subtlety. He then played a
joyous concert in a duo with Indian percussion grandmaster Trilok Gurtu. Gurtu said about
Hamasyan: “He plays piano like a raga, he is the next Keith Jarret.” Lastly, he performed with his
band whereby singer Areni Agbabian was unable to attend. It became a performance between
tradition, substantial improvisation and renewal.
Tigran Hamasyan is a musician who is at perfect ease with the traditional Armenian repertoire and
classical music – not to mention rock, heavy metal and avant-garde. He transforms old folk themes
from his homeland into modern piano pieces, he plays astoundingly romantic solos and improvises
funky songs effortlessly. As a hard-rock musician he can cry out on his piano, only to burst into a
remarkably gentle song moments later. He positions himself at a crossroads, where various types of
music pass by.
“Tigran found a way of keeping improvisation fresh and lyrical. Other jazz musicians should take
note”, wrote the British newspaper The Guardian.

OakTree
Date: Friday 11 July 2014
Hour: 4.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Annemie Osborne (cello), Thibault Dille (accordion), Sarah Klenes (vocals)
It goes without saying that the Young Jazz Talent Gent 2013 winner had to play at Gent Jazz Festival.
The atypical formation OakTree consists of cellist Annemie Osborne from Luxembourg, accordionist
Thibault Dille from Brussels and singer Sarah Klenes from Liège. Their differing musical backgrounds
see to an intriguing meld of sound textures, and their music sits at a crossroads of their passion and
interests: classical music, jazz, Balkan music and world music. In their repertoire comprising their own
compositions and free improvisation, as well as arranged jazz and Latin standards, they strive to
embody the here and now, to blend their sound colours, to supplement each other, and at times to
reverse roles with the desire both to surprise and to be surprised.

Hour: 5.50 PM & 7.50 PM & 9.50 PM
Location: Garden Stage
Line-up: Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Nasheet Waits (drums), tbc (bass)
Trumpeter Avishai Cohen plays in a modern, expressive style with intense improvisations. He boasts
a remarkably unique sound and an ever-searching spirit, and is one of the rising stars within the jazz
world.
He aims to astonish and to try out new things. The New York Times described him as an assertive,
consummate trumpeter with the taste for the modern, but also a multicultural musician. Just like
Miles Davis, he uses the trumpet as a vehicle for the most moving human clamours.

SATURDAY 12 JULY 2014
MAIN STAGE
Dave Holland ‘Prism’
Date: Saturday 12 July 2014
Hour: 10.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Dave Holland (contrabass), Kevin Eubanks (guitar), Craig Taborn (piano, Fender Rhodes), Eric
Harland (drums)
Legendary bassist Dave Holland formed a new acoustic band in 2012 with a number of jazz’s top
players. The astounding guitarist Kevin Eubanks manages to make his guitar both explode and sing
gently. Pianist Craig Taborn plays with vigour, in a swirling and elusive manner. Drummer Eric
Harland is unrivalled in his passion and tenacity. This band also breathes life into the collective spirit
characteristic of Dave Holland’s bands.
On Prism, Holland explores a form of gnarled, contemporary fusion. He hereby establishes a link to
his period with Miles Davis, when the pioneering Bitches Brew (1970) was recorded. The album
takes the listener on a trip through various musical landscapes. Intriguing funky grooves, soulful
blues (‘The Empty Chair’ is reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix) and pieces of music whereby the group
creates dramatic musical developments. Dave Holland’s authoritarian and agile bass remains the
cement, with the aim being to create a musical context in which the musicians are able to express
themselves.

Date: Saturday 12 July 2014
Hour: 8.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up:
Reeds: Erica von Kleist, Sharel Cassity, Sam Sadigursky, John Ellis, Carl Maraghi
Trumpets: Seneca Black, Tom Goehring, Matt Holman, Nadje Noordhuis, Jason Palmer
Trombones: Mike Fahie, Ryan Keberle, Jacob Garchik, Jennifer Wharton
Rhythm: Sebastian Noelle (guitar), Adam Birnbaum (piano), Matt Clohesy (contrabass) Jon Wikan
(drums)
Composer – conductor: Darcy James Argue
It’s said about Darcy James Argue – a composer and band leader active in Brooklyn – that he’s
making the big band cool once more. His breath-taking music certainly catapults the jazz big band
into the 21st century. His music isn’t quite typical of what most people expect from big band.
He has been nominated for a Grammy for his most recent album Brooklyn Babylon, after already
having been nominated for Infernal Machines in 2009. Brooklyn Babylon is an innovative multimedia
collaboration with the graphic artist Danijel Zezelj, with Zezelj depicting Brooklyn in black-and-white
monochrome. Argue wrote music for it as a suite that harks back to tradition, as well as to minimal,
indie rock, dance punk, classical and Eastern European fanfare music. It is gripping, uncommonly vital
and has enormous cinematographic panache. Argue's music has already been defined as a nearperfect synthesis between tradition and innovation. He draws from a broad spectrum of modern
rock, jazz and classical music, yet transcends pastiche effortlessly. His music is simultaneously
complex and entertaining, touches you directly and crawls inside your head. Heard live, the band has
an overwhelming force and pinpoint precision.

Mehliana feat. Brad Mehldau & Mark Guiliana
Date: Saturday 12 July 2014
Hour: 6.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Brad Mehldau (piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizers), Mark Guiliana (drums, electronics)
With the album Mehliana: Taming The Dragon, pianist Brad Mehldau – who conquered the world
with his trio and his refined music – is taking a different direction. New music is created with
synthesizers, Fender Rhodes, a laptop and the modern drum sounds and electronica of Mark
Guiliana, with contemporary rhythms and the sound of vintage synthesizers merging into each other.
On Taming The Dragon, Mehldau works with synthesizers and a Fender Rhodes piano, and learning
how to handle the analogue instruments was no mean feat. It was the work of Herbie Hancock from
the 1970s and above all the album Secrets (1976) that inspired him in this. He also turned out to be a
spoken word artist, with this words following a dreamlike logic, or insights from the dark
subconscious. In the opening piece, he presents an account of a driver who is halfway between Joe
Walsh and Dennis Hopper. Drummer Mark Giuliana responds with robust and nimble rhythms. The
synthesizer sounds at times swell up like in the old-time symphonic rock of Emerson, Lake and
Palmer, and then he seeks out burly beats or creates progressive rock fantasias. The music
sometimes sounds spacey in an old-style way, and collides and contorts with the rhythms Giuliana
plays. ‘Elegy for Amelia E.’ reveals influences of Bach and Brahms, while in the ballad ‘The Dreamer’
trancelike synthesizer sounds glide by.

3/4 Peace
Date: Saturday 12 July 2014
Hour: 4.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Ben Sluijs (alto saxophone, flute), Brice Soniano (bass), Christian Mendoza (piano)
3/4 Peace trio consists of French bassist Brice Soniano, the Peruvian-Belgian Christian Mendoza on
piano and Ben Sluijs on sax and flute.
They released the album 3/4 Peace in 2012. Their repertoire comprises their own work, standards
and free improvisations, and they draw inspiration from drum-free trios such as that of Jimmy Giuffre
with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow. The music is at times contemplative and thoughtful, at other times
energetic and vigorous. They sought out subtle interactions, and their own group colour and sound.
It is almost chamber music, but above all enjoyable and splendid jazz.
Sluijs is of Belgium’s leading alto-saxophonists with considerable international experience, who has
been working on his tone and phrasing for years. One of his specialities is performing with poets or
spoken-word artists.

Black Flower
Date: Saturday 12 July 2014
Hour: 12.00 AM
Their debut album is due out in
April 2014.

De Beren Gieren

Hour: 5.50 PM & 7.50 PM & 9.50 PM
Location: Garden Stage
Line-up: Fulco Ottervanger (piano), Lieven Van Pee (bass), Simon Segers (drums)
Exploring the boundary between expectation and wonder, you are bound to encounter De Beren
Gieren, who know how to show you what jazz is all about. De Beren Gieren use as a starting point
the compositions of Dutch pianist Fulco Ottervanger, with Lieven Van Pee (bass) and Simon Segers
(drums) constituting the ideal rhythm section for interpreting his formidable fantasies. A unique mix
of classical and contemporary composition techniques, without losing the roots in the jazz tradition.
The key to their music lies in the challenge to seek out something new with the power of
improvisation.
It has been clear since they were established that De Beren Gieren certainly don’t lack engagement,
with the group having won Young Jazz Talent Gent in 2009. With A Raveling, the group is already up
to its third album.

MAIN STAGE
Chick Corea – Stanley Clarke Duet
Date: Sunday 13 July 2014
Hour: 6.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Chick Corea (piano), Stanley Clarke (contrabass)
Chick Corea is a pianist and composer with many faces, an excellent performer and a man who with
his music touches on jazz, classical and fusion, and has built up an immensely wide-ranging and
extensive oeuvre. Stanley Clarke is one the most virtuoso and funkiest bassists on the scene. This
dialogue in which they take an acoustic look back at Return To Forever promises fireworks.
Armando Anthony 'Chick' Corea feels right at home both solo and in any jazz line-up whatsoever. He
is considered one of jazz’s most influential pianists and is of the same generation as Herbie Hancock,
Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner. He developed into a pianist with a great deal of inventiveness and
energy, experimented with the Fender Rhodes, caught the attention of Miles Davis and can be heard
on pioneering recordings such as In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. When he left Davis at the start
of the 1970s, he threw himself into various projects. He was with his The Freedom Band at Gent Jazz
Festival in 2010, with the end of the concert then transforming into an extended jam session.
Bassist Stanley Clarke’s arrival in the jazz world in 1971 was explosive. The skinny teenager from
Philadelphia was straightway able to work with renowned band leaders such as Horace Silver, Art
Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Gil Evans, Stan Getz and the young Chick Corea, who
recognised his raw talent and musicality. He recorded eight albums with Return To Forever. Stanley
Clarke had had already intensively brought the bass to the forefront, and did so even more with
albums like School Days. He also developed the special slap technique that many funk bassists
started to employ, which he had seen with Larry Graham from Sly & The Family Stone and which he
further refined. He later started working with George Duke, Jeff Beck, Ronnie Wood & Keith
Richards New Barbarians and also wrote soundtracks for films such as Romeo Must Die.
Corea and Clarke appeared at the Gent Jazz Festival 2011 with their legendary band Return To
Forever. This band played in the 1970s with considerable success, their own version of jazz rock,
which they are now reinterpreting as a duo.

Hiromi: The Trio Project
Date: Sunday 13 July 2014
Hour: 4.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Hiromi (piano), Anthony Jackson (bass), Simon Philips (drums)
The spectacular Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara guarantees enthralling, swirling yet also highly
sensitive playing. Hiromi can play both in a straight-laced manner, but also with just as much aplomb
avant-garde. Her blending of traditional and modern music is unexpected. Her most recent and ninth
album, Move, is a tour de force with an amalgamation of post-bop, unembellished jazz and rock
influences.
She likes to construct her albums around a concept, and on Move this is ‘time in a day'. Drummer
Simon Philips has his roots in rock (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour) and approaches
time as a swinging rocker, while bassist Anthony Jackson fulfils a more traditional role. On the
album, instances loaded with force and exuberance are alternated with more peaceful and graceful
moments. On Move this power jazz trio, who effortlessly combine complexity with technical bravura,
finds the almost perfect balance. Having fun and pleasure is another crucial element with this trio.
In 2010 she was at Gent Jazz Festival as a special guest of bassist Stanley Clarke. They got on
amazingly at that Saturday evening, and the set went down a storm. The evening before that she had
already come to attend in a memorable party that pianist Chick Corea added onto his concert with
his Freedom Band. This charming, diminutive woman proved to be a tiger behind the piano.
Her influences know no bounds. “I love Bach, Oscar Peterson, Franz Liszt, Ahmad Jamal, but also Sly
& the Family Stone, Dream Theatre and King Crimson.” She would also rather her music isn’t
pigeonholed. “It’s just the result of what I’ve listened to and what I’ve learned. It contains elements
of classical music, a little rock and some jazz.”

Joshua Redman Quartet with Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers &
Gregory Hutchinson
Date: Sunday 13 July 2014
Hour: 2.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Joshua Redman (saxophones), Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass), Greg
Hutchinson (drums)
Joshua Redman has been one of the key pioneering saxophonists for the last 20 years. Together with
his quartet, he each times embarks on a new adventure. He is a gifted performer and inventive
saxophonist, and the quartet provides excellent accompaniment. Drummer Gregory Hutchinson has
the knack of starting a solo unobtrusively and transforming it into an explosive rhythmic blend.
Reuben Rogers anchors the music with his deep tone featuring echoes of gospel. Pianist Aaron
Goldberg devises sparkling lines, and entices Redman with his ingenious harmonies.
On stage Redman is a true performer, where he sounds more unpolished, pricklier, as well as more
agreeable. He loves performing, since jazz is above all improvised music. This is when he changes into
a compelling story teller, and identifies the perfect tempo for the concert.

Every year Gent Jazz Festival elaborates a coaching project with students from the Conservatorium
Ghent (School of Arts). This year they are collaborating with Tineke Postma, who at the end of last
year was a guest at the Gent Jazz Club.
Tineke Postma is in the first instance a fantastic and impassioned musician. The Tineke Postma
Quartet has been around since 2006, and has already appeared on a number of international stages
and at festivals. The quartet performs its own compositions and arrangements, a mix of modern jazz
with melodic lyrics, hip rhythms and dynamic collective improvisations. At present Postma can
mainly be found in the US where she also leads a quartet with Geri Allen, Terry Lyne Carrington and
Scott Colley. With the Mosaic project of Terri Lyne Carrington, in the summer of 2013 she was also

Jon Batiste and Stay Human
Date: Sunday 13 July 2014
Hour: 1.50 PM & 3.50 PM & 5.50 PM
Location: Garden Stage
Line-up: Jon Batiste (piano, vocals), Phil Kuehn (bass), Joe Saylor (drums), Eddie Barbash (alto
saxophone), Ibanda Ruhumbika (tuba)
Piano virtuoso and singer Jon Batiste is a consummate performer. With this band Stay Human, he
has devised an authentic and infectious way of telling stories. When live, he can scarcely stay down
on his piano stool.
Batiste plays what he himself calls ‘social music’, a blend of New Orleans jazz with roots in gospel and
blues, and updated with bebop loops and contemporary funk licks. He hails from New Orleans, and
has soaked up that city’s rich musical culture.
In 2005 he started performing regularly on the New York scene with his trio, consisting of bassist Phil
Kuehn and drummer Joe Saylor. A few years later they were joined by alto saxophonist Eddie
Barbash and tuba player Ibanda Ruhumbika. He christened his band Stay Human and they brought
out the album MY N.Y. which was recorded entirely on the New York metro. Batiste has since then
collaborated with a broad spectrum of musicians, such as Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Wynton Marsalis,
Cassandra Wilson, Jimmy Buffett and Harry Connick Jr.
Jon Batiste is the co-director and musical curator of The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, where he
sets up workshops for hundreds of students. He is also the ambassador of New York-based Music
Unites, a non-profit organisation providing musical education to children with an ear and passion for
music.

Ludovico Einaudi
Date: Thursday 17 July 2014
Hour: 10.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line up: Ludovico Einaudi (piano), Federico Mecozzi (violin, guitar), Marco Decimo (cello), Redi Hasa
(cello), Alberto Fabris (live electronica, electric bass), Francesco Arcuri (guitars, kalimba, steel drums),
Riccardo Laganà (percussion)
“I’m not a fan of definitions per se, but for me the term ‘minimalist’ is a term that primarily means
elegance and openness. Thus if I really have to, I choose the term ‘minimalist’ above any other
description”, says Einaudi.
Pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi is synonymous withelegant, accessible yet above all
compellingly beautiful piano music. At the crossroads of contemporary classical and minimalism, with
a frugal use of electronica and loops, he explores the boundaries of his music and weaves them
together into his own, novel style.
His music can be heard in a great many films and TV series, including Fuori del mondo, Black Swan,
Intouchables and the TV series Doctor Zhivago, among others.
Album after album, without the support of frequent airplay or attention in the popular media, he has
managed to build up a solid fan base. Tour after tour, the halls also increase that bit more in size,
whether he’s playing solo or with a large ensemble.

Hour: 8.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Melanie De Biasio (vocals, flute), Pascal Mohy (piano), Pascal Paulus (analogue synths), Sam
Gerstmans (contrabass), Dré Pallemaerts (drums)
For years now she has managed to move audiences on the jazz scene with her natural, warm and
clear timbre of voice. The latest album No Deal has, in recent months, led her career to gain
considerable momentum.
No Deal is a bluesy interplay of light and shadow, a powerful, enigmatic and addictive album that
enjoyed unanimous accolades on both sides of the language barrier, far beyond the jazz scene. Seven
tracks and a total of 33 minutes was all she needed to score one of last year’s top albums. Things are
also moving fast for Melanie De Biasio abroad. France is at present being completely won over, while
in the UK influential radio DJ Gilles Peterson named No Deal album of the week on BBC Radio 6.
De Biasio touches on the essence, and ventures like no other to rewrite her arrangements into
modern pieces of music in which the hypnotic rhythms of Nina Simone and the mysterious soul of
Beth Gibbons, Scott Walker and Mark Hollis resonate.
For the album No Deal, she surrounded herself with prominent musicians such as Mohy on piano,
Pascal Paulus on analogue synthesizer and Dré Pallemaerts on drums.

entitled For Now I Am Winter. It is the first album on which he uses vocals for his muted
compositions. Arnalds creates minimalistic and neoclassical music based on piano, electronica and

Both albums have an eccentric and creative lo-fi sound, and are reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Kate

Three years ago when we announced Agnes Obel as the opening act of a festival day we received –
at best – the response: “Agnes who?” However, the then entirely unknown girl-with-piano
conquered Europe with the track ‘Riverside’. Her debut album also became a best seller in Belgium,
and catapulted Obel, to her own surprise, to a mainstream audience.
She last year released the long-awaited follow-up to her debut album, Aventine. She once again
chose the fragile sound of whispering tracks with a sparing piano, cello and viola. We are glad to be
able to welcome her this summer to Gent Jazz Festival; and this time not as a budding debutante
who we want to give a chance with the Belgian public, but as a popular musician who in recent years
has sold out ever larger venues, and has more than earned her place on our billboard.

BADBADNOTGOOD (also abbreviated to BBNG) comprises three fresh-faced Canadian jazz students
with huge predilection for hip-hop. Their story began with a cover of a track from Odd Future that
soon spread through the internet and meant that in no time at all, BBNG became the darling of
numerous music blogs.
They are now known for a number of idiosyncratic reinterpretations of, among others, Flying Lotus,
Nas, and Kanye West, whereby they deconstruct the songs entirely and fashion them into electronic,
overwrought jazz versions performed live with heaps of energy and intensity. Although the focus is
on amalgamation and a love of jazz and hip-hop they also look further, and besides their own songs
adapt Joy Division or the music of the Zelda computer games just as well.

Michael Kiwanuka

Hour: 6.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
“Tell me a tale that always was, Sing me a song that I’ll always be in” were the first words we heard
from the young singer-songwriter from London. His debut album Home Again was an instant hit, and
Kiwanuka become one of the revelations. The BBC immediately proclaimed Kiwanuka the ‘sound of
2012’, and he totally lived up to expectations.
Kiwanuka comes from a family of Ugandan immigrants, and it was his encounters that led to his
passion for music. At a young age Kiwanuka was a fan of Nirvana, Blur and Radiohead, yet he soon
came into contact with soul and jazz, with musical touchstones such as Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye
and Bill Withers. The comparison with Withers is nourished by the sound-colour of Kiwanuka’s
voice, which has the warmth of a vinyl record. “It certainly wasn’t the intention to make my voice
sound ‘old’. The tracks just come out in the way I want to express myself, and apparently sound old.”

Location: Main Stage
Line-up : Gregory Frateur (vocals), Nicolas Rombouts (bass), Roel Van Camp (accordion), Sjoerd Bruil
(guitar), Tijs Delbeke (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Steven Cassiers (drums)
Ever since Dez Mona joined the Belgian music landscape, they have always attached a great deal of
importance to the way their work is translated to the stage. It was thus written in the stars that
sooner or later the group would come up with a live CD. The title X (Roman ten) refers to the number
of years that singer Gregory Frateur and contrabassist Nicolas Rombouts have been making music
together. They created a CD that illustrates the energy of their concerts, but that has been finished
off with just as much care as their studio albums.
X was consciously not conceived as a ‘best of’, yet provides a good picture of the development that
Dez Mona has undergone between Pursued Sinners (2005) and A Gentleman’s Agreement (2013). It
contains tracks from all of the group’s LPs, and straddles the entire stylistic spectrum between rock,
jazz, classical, gospel, tango and chanson, that has by now become its trademark. “But”, says
Rombouts, “we do want the songs to be heard as we play them today, with our current band.
Because our musical approach has changed enormously over the years.”

stuck on Dans Dans say it all about their eclectic approach. On both their first album and live, the
band not only immersed itself in the work of, among others, Sun Ra, Nick Drake, Sonny Rollins and
Ennio Morricone, but also fully embraced the world of audacious improvisation.
It is above all live, dancing on the razor’s edge, that the band reveals its true nature: that of restless
music junkies, constantly craving innovation.

SATURDAY 19 JULY 2014
MAIN STAGE
Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires
Date: Saturday 19 July 2014
Hour: 10.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Charles Bradley (vocals), Billy Aukstik (trumpet), Alex Chakour (guitar), Vince Chiarito (bass),
Freddy DeBoe (sax), Will Schalda (organ), Paul Schalda (guitar, vocals), Caito Sanchez (drums, vocals)
Despite the fact this 'Screaming Eagle of Soul' only broke through at an age when most people are
starting to think of retiring, Charles Bradley has only got better over the years under the aegis of his
accompanying band The Extraordinaires.
Charles Bradley debuted three years ago as a 60-year old. That in itself is highly exceptional, yet
Bradley’s life hasn’t always been a walk in the park. He lived on the street for a long time, conflicts
with this mother, lost his brother during an armed assault, made ends meet with all kinds of sidejobs, and occasionally performed as a James Brown impersonator. He was discovered and in 2011
released the album No Time For Dreaming on Daptone Records, home base of Sharon Jones and her
Dap Kings, among others. The record proved a success and launched Bradley’s career; the album title
No Time For Dreaming couldn’t have been more apt. Bradley was also the subject of the amazing
documentary Charles Bradley - Soul of America, which we highly recommend.
Last year came the successor Victim of Love, on which Bradley further screams the soul out of his
body. His days as a James Brown impersonator are now firmly behind him.

José James
Date: Saturday 19 July 2014
Hour: 8.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: José James (vocals), Kris Bowers (keyboards), Solomon Dorsey (bass), Brad Williams (guitar),
Richard Spaven (drums)
José James – the jazz singer of the hip-hop generation – is impossible to pigeonhole. With his
amazing voice and enormous empathy, he always sounds elegant, restrained and seductive. A
sensual gentleman who with his stylish appearance fits in just as well in a 1950s jazz club as in a
polished video clip in HD. Last year he provided one of the best performances at Gent Jazz Festival,
and we liked it so much we asked him to do it again this year.
On his last album No Beginning No End, José James projected himself as a new soul man. He builds
further on musical heritage, from Ray Charles to Marvin Gaye, to Lou Rawls and Maxwell, but
moreover also likes to lean on R&B innovators such as Frank Ocean. He performs feel-good soul jazz,
seasoned with dub, rhythm-‘n-blues and soft hip-hop. In his new soul, the tone is provided by
generous bass drums and dry, crackling snare drums. He opts for minimalistic hip-hop à la J Dilla and
allows his voice to be driven by lingering, sexually-laden funk, with teasing organs and trumpets. This
year James will be releasing another album in June, on which he goes full out with a sturdier funky
sound, and refers to Sly & The Family.
In June James is again releasing an album, While You Were Sleeping (Blue Note Records), where he
fully embraces a more solid sound and funky guitars. The album emanates the influence of Jimi
Hendrix and Al Green, with a cover of Green’s ‘Simply Beautiful’. “This album is a synthesis of
everything I love about music. From contemporary artists like Frank Ocean, James Blake and Junip to
groundbreaking artists I grew up with like Nirvana, Radiohead and Madlib.”

Gabriel Rios
Date: Saturday 19 July 2014
Hour: 6.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Line-up: Gabriel Rios (guitar, vocals), Ruben Samama (bass), Amber Docters van Leeuwen (cello)
Following his debut album Ghostboy (2004), Gabriel Rios was described as the ‘Ghent Puerto Rican’.
From the sensitive electro-pop on Angelhead (2007) to the sparkling single ‘Dauphine’ propelled by a
simple piano, these are tracks that bear witness to the continual search for the boundaries of his
talent.
Since September 2013 Rios has each month released a new single, which is piece by piece leading to
his new album, This Marauder’s Midnight. In recent months he has brought out gems such as ‘Gold’
and ‘Police Sounds’. The tracks present a distilled sound whereby, besides the guitar and voice of
Rios, Ruben Samama’s bass and Amber Docters van Leeuwen’s cello determine the sound-colour.
This summer, the trio are furthermore being supplemented with a wind section at Gent Jazz Festival.

Delv!s
Date: Saturday 19 July 2014
Hour: 4.30 PM
Location: Main Stage
Belgium might not have a Sharon Jones, a Jamie Lidell or a Charles Bradley; but what we do have is
Delv!s or Niels Delvaux, from Landen of all places. He can’t just be placed within the funk bracket,
and he sounds like Lidell when he left his band Super Collider. Delv!s unifies soul and funk, and
hovers imaginatively between Al Green and Nina Simone, flirting musically with electronica that
Flying Lotus would appreciate.
He first gained prominence together with Uphigh Collective (the track 'Blend') and Title (the track
'Sidechain Reaction') and as the supporting act of Selah Sue. With last year’s 'Tell Me', he provided
the single of the summer. He has yet to release a debut album, although this way he is taking the
path of gradual growth, which makes it all the more promising.

GARDEN STAGE
GoDeviLLe Remembered
Date: Saturday 19 July 2014
Hour: 5.50 PM & 7.50 PM & 9.50 PM & 12.00 AM
Location: Garden stage
Line-up: DJ Slammy (turntables), Edward Capel (saxophones, effects), Bart Maris (trumpet, effects),
Filip Wauters (guitar), Giovanni Barcella (drums)
DJ GoDeviLLe AKA René Dewever was an established name at Gent Jazz Festival. He would attend
the festival every year as a visitor, and one festival day a year provided DJ sets between
performances with an exceptionally inspired mix of all things good – both old and new – that
authentic music has to offer. It was thus a sombre day when he passed away last autumn. This is why
we this year want to close the festival in a fitting manner with four sets (5.50 PM, 7.50 PM, 9.50 PM
and midnight) on the Garden Stage, in homage to GoDeviLLe.
His death meant we lost a pioneer and icon of the Ghent music scene, and the legendary ‘Party Live’
concerts in which turntables and live instruments – as well as the strangest percussion objects – were
blended together into the most other-worldly cocktails of groove and chaos, mystery and energy,
also came to end. Nevertheless, the spirit of this grand master lives on. His ‘Party Live’ buddies are
joining forces to bring to life the trance of these sessions once more.
