April, 2013 CPF Newsletter Dear Fellow Parents and French Immersion Families, On behalf of the Salmon Arm Chapter of Canadian Parents for French, I would like to invite you to our next chapter meeting to be held this Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at the SMS School Library at 7:00 p.m. Due to a change in meeting scheduling this year we only have 2 meetings at SMS where they operate 3 FI tracks as well as an English program. Mr. Corston attended the meeting in October and Mr. Fazan is attending this meeting. SMS has completed their annual Concours selection to provide the opportunity for their students to attend the Provincial Concours for Grade 6 to 12 students at SFU Surrey on May 4. Congratulations to those students chosen to attend the Provincial Finals and a Big Thank You to the SMS teachers who organized it! CPF has assisted parents who have taken their children to Surrey with a $100 Honourarium and we will be voting on whether we will do it this year on Wednesday. Registration for Early FI and Late FI is now complete with spots available for both programs by contacting Bastion or SMS. The cycle of long registration line-ups for EFI appears to be broken and a re-vamped registration for LFI worked well with parents and students registering at the Information meeting. No one has stepped up to help organize a French Bingo at Bastion so it appears that event will join other events that happen only as long as the initial organizers stay with it. Thanks to Marta Bukmeier who volunteered at the last meeting to be Geographical Representative assisted by Sheri Hamilton, our long term Secretary. Family French Camp is happening in the Shuswap for the second year making it extremely easy for our FI students to attend, even as a day camper. Week 1 is July 6-13 and week 2 is July 13-20. More information is available on their Website and I see they are asking for volunteers to assist. There are many FI students and parents who have attended camps at Nanaimo and in the Okanagan, so ask around if you want information on these high quality camps. Grade 12 graduates had their Congratulations Cake on February 28 and flowers were given to Bonnie Kelly, Board Office Secretary, and Madame Hamel by CPF during French Month. Our thanks to Tim Horton’s for once again donating hot chocolate for the celebration. This will be my last meeting as a SMS parent so I am looking for SMS parents who want to be involved in CPF. Volunteering to help on the local CPF Executive means you can help provide activities that will enrich your child’s education and also help you be aware of how the School System operates. Volunteering enriches our lives as parents and strengthens our community’s commitment to bilingualism. See the SMS Website for interesting teacher suggested French Websites and the latest CPF minutes. For more information contact wbcarson@shaw.ca Hope to see you at the meeting!
