April 2014 Junior News Letter The club had its Junior AGM on the 14April commencing at 18.30 hrs. A Big Thank You to those who sent apologies This was attended by parents and juniors alike and I would like to thank all those who did attend and who supported the various activities on offer such as the putting competition and the sweet card draw. The raffle also proved very successful with a few Easter eggs on offer as prizes and other items donated as well, all helping raise a few pounds for the junior section. The meeting was also attended by the Hon Secretary Mr Robin Graham, The President Mr David Webb, The Club Captain Mr Tony Sneesby and The Club Vice Captain Mr Mo Morrison. The Lady Captain Mrs Eileen Grisdale and The Lady Vice Captain Mrs Margaret Twynam. The Club Welfare Officer Mr David Howell and the Head Green Keeper Mr Phil Shakespeare. The evening was opened by me as Junior Chair and I personally met each junior individually and was impressed with their positive attitude regarding Barrow Golf Club. I asked Robin, David and Tony to introduce themselves to everybody especially the juniors so they can recognise them in the future as points of contact both in the club house and on the course should the need arise. Members of council mentioned above were also introduced to the juniors and on a personal note I would like to thank them for their support. Juniors received two balls and a pitch mark repairer for attending and they also had the chance to meet other juniors who also had attended. Our Bar Licensee Mr Simon Dutton also gave the juniors a free glass of coke and then was asked to speak about the benefits of becoming social members benefitting parents whilst the juniors are having a lesson with a discount on drinks and food with the new reward loyalty card scheme. David Howell then introduced himself to both parents and juniors as the Welfare Officer and spoke about Barrow Golf Club and how being a member had helped him throughout his life especially with regards to adding information and achievements on your C.V. David then discussed his role briefly as the Welfare Officer and should the need arise he was contactable through the office at the golf club. I then had the privilege of introducing the new Junior Captain Mr Callum Morrison and the Junior Vice Captain Joe Mitchell. Their support to me already has been invaluable and publicly would like to thank them for this. Callum then spoke to all the juniors and parents and expressed his delight and pleasure at becoming junior Captain and also what he wanted to see happen in real terms regarding junior golf at Barrow. Both Callum and Joe are frequent attendees of the club and are always willing to pass on tips and advice to all the younger members and both are willing to help all juniors in any way they can. April 2014 Junior News Letter I then spoke about the future of junior golf at Barrow and the aspirations and hopes that myself and all council had in the development of a vibrant junior section and indeed the plans and ideas that the juniors had themselves regarding the junior development that were gauged by a simple survey conducted at the AGM were not a million miles apart. Survey results showed that juniors wanted an area for themselves with a TV, so that they could “Chill” out and have refreshments and a bite to eat. A Better Practice area was also high on the agenda and this is also high on the Junior Councils list of Junior Golf development at Barrow. Both I and the members of the Junior Council will be working hard on behalf of the Junior section to accommodate any suggestions you may have and also to further develop Junior golf at Barrow. The practice area is one aspect that we can develop thereby ensuring better Junior development and better skills development in a safer environment. The aspect of safety is a key enabler for all of the Junior Council and Barrow Golf Council and as such all the junior council and associated volunteers who will be assisting in the future with junior golf will be required to undertake a DBS check and to have an awareness of safeguarding procedures. Barrow Golf Club is fully committed to this legal and fundamental requirement of child protection. Barrow Golf Club has recently been designated with the Golf Mark achievement again and the Sports England Club Mark in recognition of its commitment to Junior and beginners golf, including child protection. Lastly but not least I would like to thank my wife Joanne along with my two children Charli and Jack who organised the Putting game, raffle and sweet card games. The three of them ran each stall and this allowed me to set up the meeting and also they raised £66.55 for the Junior Section as a direct result of their efforts. The junior section will only be viable if people are willing to get involved and we keep on attracting juniors to Barrow Golf Club. So if you wish to help or have brothers and sisters or friends who want to have a go at golf please come and see me or speak to Mike in the professionals shop. I look forward to meeting you all and playing golf with you all. Here’s to a good golfing summer. Regards Grahame Junior Chair. April 2014 Junior News Letter
