(Atlanta, GA) (August 19, 2013) Out On Film, Atlanta’s LGBT film festival, has announced
its programming for Out On Film 26, the 26thth annual LGBT film festival. The event will take
place October 3 – 10, 2013 at Landmark’s Midtown Art Cinema.
The opening night film is Darren Stein’s “G.B.F,” a comic romp about a high school student
who comes out and sends repercussions through the entire school. “‘G.B.F.’ is a gay ‘Mean Girls,’
says Jim Farmer, Out On Film’s festival director. “Not only is it fresh and funny, with great dialogue
but it has a cast of up and coming young talent - Michael Willett (‘United States of Tara’), Paul
Iacono (‘The Hard Times of RJ Berger’), Xosha Roquemore (‘The Mindy Project’), Sasha Pieterse
(‘Pretty Little Liars’) and Andrea Bowen (‘Desperate Housewives’) - and a supporting cast that
includes Megan Mullally and Natasha Lyonne.”
The closing night film is Linda Bloodworth-Thomason’s (“Designing Women”) awardwinning “Bridegroom,” which tells the true story of Shane Bitney Crone, who lost his partner Tom
in an accident and was banned from the funeral from Tom’s parents. Crone made a YouTube video
about the incident titled “It Could Happen to You” that went viral, has been seen by millions of
people, and lead to the film. “I think ‘Bridegroom’ is the best gay romance since ‘Brokeback
Mountain,” says Farmer. “Shane’s story is powerful and heartbreaking, but also hopeful, about
moving on in the face of tragedy.” Crone is expected to attend the festival.
The eight-day festival will feature more 75 feature films, documentaries, short films and
premieres from all over the world. “We are very proud of this year’s schedule, which I think is the
best and deepest in our history,” says Farmer. “There’s literally something for everyone.”
Other centerpiece screenings include Jeffrey Schwarz’s affectionate “I Am Divine,” a look at
Glenn Milstead, aka drag sensation Divine, who became a star in John Waters’ films; Del Shores’
“Southern Baptist Sissies,” a filmed adaptation of his award-wining play; “Harry Potter’s” Daniel
Radcliffe starring as Allen Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings,” “Noah’s Arc” veteran Doug Spearman
and his sleek “Hot Guys With Guns;” “Were the World Mine’s” Tom Gustafson’s sexy “Getting
Go: The Go Doc Project;” and Anna Margarita Albelo’s inventive, satirical “Who’s Afraid of
Vagina Wolf,” starring Albelo, Guinevere Turner and Carrie Preston.
Some of this year’s outstanding documentaries are “Before You Know” P.J. Raval’s
examination of the aging LGBT population; the aforementioned “I Am Divine;” “Breaking
Through,” Cindy Abel’s look at LGBT politicians, local and national, and their stories of self-doubt
and triumph; and “The Rugby Player,” Scott Gracheff’s film about United 93’s Mark Bingham and
his relationship with his mother Alice Hoagland. Both Gracheff and Hoagland are expected to attend
the festival. “Valentine Road,” the highly acclaimed look at the murder of 15-year-old Larry King in
a suburban schoolyard in California, will have a special pre-festival screening on Tuesday, October
1st at the Philip Rush Center.

Since its official inception in 1988, Out On Film has grown to become one of the major
LGBT film festivals in the country. The organization became independent in 2008 and in 2011
expanded to eight days. The 25th anniversary film festival in 2012 was the most attended in the
organization’s history.

Chad Darnell’s follow-up to his 2012 award-winning short “Groom’s Cake” is a comic howler – a
mockumentary following the three days leading up to the first birthday party of a child with two gay

“I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole” tells the story of a sometimes overlooked
gay liberation and independent film making pioneer. In late 1971, Wakefield Poole, a respected
Broadway dancer and choreographer, had the audacity to put his real name above the title of his first
film, a low-budget, hardcore gay erotic feature called “Boys in the Sand.” And to make sure everyone
knew about it, Poole advertised the film in the NY Times, creating a sensation. In an era when anyone
making, promoting, or appearing in what the US government considered "pornography" could be
liable for prosecution and jail time, Poole was a remarkably open and honest gay film maker. He
became internationally famous and his movies screened for years as examples that films could be
artistic as well as sexually explicit. Director/Producer Jim Tushinski continues the exploration of art
and sexuality he began in That Man: Peter Berlin, but this time around, the main character is not a
cool, untouchable icon. Poole was an outspoken and articulate artist in a turbulent, passionate time.
