Research Experience

Collections Assistant: OSU Ichthyology Collection

Sidlauskas Lab , Oregon State University, June 2011-present

Supervisor: Dr. Brian Sidlauskas

Overview: Worked in a team to perform a variety of tasks associated with the relocation, maintenance, and advancement of the university’s fish collection. Used dichotomous keys to identify unknown specimens. Used Specify cataloging software. Fixed and preserved specimens using formalin and isopropyl alcohol.

Research Assistant

Vari Lab, Division of Fishes, National Museum of Natural History (August 2012- September 2012)

Supervisor: Richard Vari

Overview: Conducted a taxonomic survey of the African Butterfly Fish (genus Pantodon). Investigated the comparative external morphology of representative specimens from across its geographic range using standard counts and measurement. Compared externally obvious osteology and pigmentation patterns. Used radiographic methods to compare internal morphology using standard counts.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Natural History Research Experience (NHRE)

Genetics Lab , Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (June 2012-August 2012)

Supervisor: Terry Chesser

Overview: Studied genetic variation in the Pygmy Antwren (Myrmotherula brachyura) across its geographic range using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Fisheries Lab Assistant

Sidlauskas Lab , Oregon State University, January 2012-February 2012

Supervisor: Kendra Hoekzema

Overview: Conducted genetic extraction and analysis using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis.

Fisheries Research Assistant

Heppell Lab , Oregon State University, December 2012-February 2012

Supervisor: Noelle Yochum

Overview: Participated in a study investigating bycatch mortality in Dungeness Crab

(Metacarcinus magister) Using Reflex Action Mortality Predictor (RAMP) methods. Performed

Adam C.D. Martin general husbandry tasks including cleaning tanks and feeding Dungeness Crab.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant: Systematics of Fishes

Sidlauskas Lab , Oregon State University, September 2011-December 2011

Supervisor: Dr. Brian Sidlauskas, Noelle Yochum

Overview: Actively supported a learning atmosphere by prepping labs, as well as proctoring students interested in studying after hours. Conducted review sessions before exams and administered mock practical exams.

Fisheries Research Assistant

Sidlauskas Lab , Oregon State University, June 2011-September 2011

Supervisor: Whitcomb Bronaugh

Overview: Analyzed members of Longnose Dace (Rhinichthys osculus) using geometric morphometrics and genetics from along the Oregon coast range to determine the phylogeography of the species and define their taxonomic rank.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Intern

ODFW, LaGrande, Oregon, July 2010-September 2010

Supervisor: Timothy Bailey

Overview: Worked in a team to perform a variety of management activities including creel, snorkel, seine, gillnet, red, and electro fishing surveys of various fish and amphibian species. Retrieved genetic samples, kidney samples, and snout tags from deceased adult salmon Oncorhynchus

tshawytscha. Prepped and performed multi-day horse and mule trips into the Wallowa

Whitman National Forest.

Lab Technician

Gerth Lab, Oregon State University, January 2010-June 2010

Supervisor: Dr. William Gerth

Overview: Sorted aquatic invertebrate samples for a study on the effects of forestry on aquatic ecosystems.
