ADVISEE CHECKLIST:MAKE SURE YOUR ADVISEES ARE PREPARED FOR THE WORLD OF WORK FRESHMAN YEAR MAJOR AND CAREER EXPLORATION: Refer students who are struggling with career discernment to the Career Center. Have your advisee call the Career Center at 333-6339 to make an appointment while they are still in your office. RÉSUMÉ DEVELOPMENT: This is the ideal time for your advisee to start developing a résumé. It is much easier for them to create a resume and add to it, rather than scramble at the last minute when the perfect internship becomes available. Your advisee can have it reviewed during walk-in hours or schedule an appointment. ASSISTANCE IN FINDING PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT: Part-time employment helps strengthen a student’s resume and sometimes helps them determine a career path. Encourage students to: Attend ProFair to seek part-time employment Utilize their BeeCareers account and search under part-time, workstudy (if eligible), or temp campus jobs NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK: Most experts say up to 80% of jobs are found through networking. Encourage students to start networking as soon as they start college and continue while obtaining their degree: Attend ProFair to practice networking skills Take advantage of the BeeConnection (links students with alumni, so they can answer career-related questions) Create a LinkedIn account to keep track of their network and research profiles of professionals in their field Attend the Networking and Etiquette Dinner to learn how to network GET INVOLVED: Employers like to see at least 3 or 4 related or unrelated activities / organizations on a students’ resume upon graduation. Freshman year is the perfect time to start seeking out activities, so by the time they are juniors they can take on leadership positions within the organization. Encourage your students to attend Club Fest, contact student activities, or advise them on local professional organizations with student memberships to join.. GAIN SKILLS: Have your advisee identify at least four skills employers want and help them plan how they will acquire these skills before graduation. Have them visit the career center if they need help in identifying these skills. SOPHMORE YEAR CAREER BOOT CAMP: In one day students can have their resume /LinkedIn profile reviewed and participate in a mock interview with feedback from five different employers. Your advisee should attend to help them in securing internships or relevant part-time or volunteer experience. INTERNSHIPS / RELEVANT PART-TIME or VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: Sophomore year is when students should be starting to look for internships or work experience relevant to their major. Those students who find an internship need to meet with the Career Center Internship Coordinator to fill out paperwork to get college credit or have the internship noted on their transcripts. There are a variety of ways for students to find internships: BeeCAREERS Networking Attending Career Fairs Meeting with our Internship Coordinator MAJOR AND CAREER EXPLORATION: Sophomore year students may determine their major is not a good fit. The Career Center offers a 7-week career exploration group in the beginning of the spring semester. If your advisee thinks they may need to switch majors, encourage them to contact the Career Center to register for this class. RESEARCH: Research experience will be very important for students applying to graduate school. Encourage your advisee to get involved in the summer research institute their sophomore year or by the time they graduate. REVIEW SKILLS: Ask your advisee what progress they have made on the skills they want to develop. If they do, encourage them to continue to gain experience. Many of the students who quickly find employment have 2 or 3 internships or relevant jobs on their resume upon graduation. GAIN LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE: This is the time for students to take on leadership positions. Leadership experience on a students’ resume will help them stand apart. Take on a leadership position in a campus organization Attend Destination Leadership Apply for a leadership position in athletics or in a campus department (i.e. RA, NSS Peer Assistant, etc.) I-74 GRAD SCHOOL FAIR: If your advisee is planning to attend grad school, make sure they attend the I-74 grad school fair at Augustana during the fall semester. Students will have the opportunity to gather information from representatives from schools from all over the country. PERSONAL STATEMENT: If your advisee is applying to grad school and needs a second set of eyes to review their personal statement, refer them to the Career Center. REVIEW SKILLS: Ask your advisee what progress they have made on the skills they want to develop. SENIOR YEAR JOB SEARCH: Encourage your advisee to start applying for jobs 6 months prior to graduation. There are a variety of ways for students to obtain full-time employment: BeeCAREERS On-campus recruiting Networking Attending ProFair or Health Sciences Fair Meet with a Career Counselor to determine the job search plan best for you UPDATE RÉSUMÉ: Hopefully your advisee’s resume has changed significantly since they were a freshman. Encourage them to continue to work with the Career Center to keep up to date on the latest résumé trends and to find out how to make their resume more competitive for a full-time position or graduate school. CAREER BOOT CAMP: Your advisee will be graduating soon and will need to take advantage of this event to brush up on their interviewing skills and to have their résumé and LinkedIn profile reviewed prior to applying for positions. The Career Counselor will coach them and the recorded session will help guide them on how to modify their non-verbal communication. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK: Encourage your advisee to attend the Networking and Etiquette Dinner again to brush up on their skills and learn appropriate etiquette for attending business meetings and lunch / dinner interviews. SOCIAL MEDIA: Social media can help or hinder students in their job search. Encourage your advisee to take down any unprofessional pictures and update all their social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Blogs, Google+, personal website, etc.) and display a professional image. CONNECT: Encourage students to connect with alumni using the BeeConnection and / or get in touch with any additional contacts in their field for advice on how to go about their job search. Most people are aware of how difficult it is to obtain your first job after graduation and are willing to give advice to help new grads find employment.
