Band Leveled Assessment - Proficient
Note: This assessment is designed to determine the proficiency level of students wishing to enter the
proficient level for this content area. Each student must demonstrate adequate proficiency based on this
assessment before he/she is permitted to enter this level.
Teachers: There must be at least two certified music teachers or an individual pursuing a music degree
present in the audition. You will use the GCS All-County Band Audition Rubric for scoring. Please audio
record each audition. In the event of a challenge, the recording will be provided to a committee of
GCS band directors at a monthly meeting for analysis and scoring.

2011 All-District Solo for Each Instrument
Students must score a minimum of 70 total score to be permitted in the Proficient level of Band.
Students may be placed in a more advanced ensemble for instrumentation purposes but not
receiving proficient level credit.
2) Music Theory Assessment
Students must demonstrate proficiency in music reading and comprehension skills using
the music theory survey tool included. A score of 70 is necessary.
3) An average grade of “A” in middle school band.
* Students who audition and are accepted into the All-State Middle School Band will automatically be
eligible for advancement to the Proficient level of Band.

21-30: GOOD, but less mature, mistakes in pitch, tone, control, rhythm,
articulation, interpretation, dynamics, key, and/or time signature.
11-20: FAIR, but many mistakes in pitch, tone, control, articulation, rhythm,
interpretation, dynamics, key, and/or time signature.
0-10: POOR performance

23-30: EXCELLENT performance, few mistakes if any, in pitch, tone, control,
articulation, rhythm, interpretation, dynamics, key, and/or time signatures.
15-22: GOOD, but less mature, mistakes in pitch, tone, control, rhythm,
articulation, interpretation, dynamics, key, and/or time signature.
8-14: FAIR, but many mistakes in pitch, tone, control, articulation, rhythm,
interpretation, dynamics, key, and/or time signature.
0-7: POOR performance
