In a city renowned for its internationalism, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts has played a
unique and influential role in developing generations of performing, screen and technical artists. The
Academy's six Schools – Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre &
Entertainment Arts –make the Academy a vibrant centre of practice, teaching and practice-based
research. Its outstanding international reputation is reinforced by the quality of its performers and its
partnerships with other centres of excellence locally, regionally and internationally. With
international residencies, visiting artists and alumni, which number amongst them some of the most
respected professionals in the industry, the Academy is prolific in its creativity and dedicated to the
training of future leaders in the performing arts and the creative and cultural industries.
The School offers pathways in Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Sound, Screenwriting and
Production Administration. It is equipped to a high level with film (35mm/16mm), high definition
(HD) video cameras and digital post-production facilities for picture and sound editing, visual effects
design and colour correction.
The Chair of School of Film and Television will be a renowned performing arts practitioner and
educator who will be responsible to the Dean of College of Theatre & Media Arts and Deputy
Director (Academic Programmes & Educational Innovation) for the academic, artistic and operational
management of the School. The Chair will bring high level discipline based expertise to the Academy
to ensure that the School maintains its place as a leader in performing arts education. The incumbent
will be required to work collaboratively in delivering the Academy’s strategic objectives.
The Chair of School of Film and Television is expected to lead the shaping of the overall vision and
academic development of the School during a significant and exciting period of change within the
Academy and the sector.
The Chair of School of Film and Television will work closely with other senior staff to promote
innovative developments in the delivery of performing arts education with a particular focus on the
Academy’s unique strengths, including its location in a dynamic and diverse cultural metropolis, its
focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and original creativity. The Chair of School of Film and
Television will also play an important role in the development of local, regional and international
partnerships within their discipline, building upon existing strengths and developing new areas that
support the overall growth and positioning of the School.
Although subject to negotiation, the expected commencement date is 8 August 2016.
The Person
The successful candidate should have a track record as a leading performing arts practitioner with
significant experience in their respective discipline. He/she should also possess the following
attributes:
- Strong academic background
- Track record of teaching, service and scholarly achievement
- Demonstrated record of successful artistic, academic and administrative accomplishment within an
academic organization
- A successful track record of leadership within an educational institution or similar performing arts
based organization
- Solid knowledge of trends and developments in performing arts education, as well as an in-depth
understanding of the
Academy’s role and future development in the region
- High level interpersonal and communication skills
- Evidence of successful outcomes in building productive partnerships with tertiary institutions,
industry, and community
groups
- A willingness and enthusiasm to embrace, lead and manage change
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
Appointment will be made on a four-year renewable contract with 15% end of contract gratuity.
Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits. Housing subsidy will be provided to the
eligible appointee. The current standard rate of income tax in Hong Kong is 15%.
