Burnchurch NS Biodiversity Action Plan Goal 1 To Create Awareness of Biodiversity Action 1. Inform Parents that the school is now participating in Green-Schools Biodiversity 2. Biodiversity Awareness Survey a) Carry out Biodiversity Awareness Survey to examine level of awareness among students and staff. b) Graph results in bar chart format c) Analyse the survey and suggest recommendations. 3. Habitat Map a)Draw a Habitat Map of the school grounds to identify and mark habitats by shading each area with different colours b) Compile list of Species in all identified habitats. c) Identify trees growing on the school grounds and mark on the map d) Identify areas for positioning new habitats to promote biodiversity. 4. Data Base Of Species a) Set up a Data base listing all plants, invertebrates, birds and mammals in school grounds b) Set up a folder for each habitat c) Draw, paint or photograph all species found and make a list. d) Hold Biodiversity day when classes to find as many species as they can. e) Invite a Heritage Specialist to the school to help find, name and record species. 5. Learn about the diversity around us a) Use teaching resources and worksheets from Green School Web Site and Internet sites to learn about various species in our grounds and local countryside. b) Record the seasonal changes that occur in habitats by observing and recording in My Nature Detective Notebook. 6. Green Code Hold a poster/slogan competition to come up with a new Green Code relating to biodiversity. Increase Biodiversity in the School Grounds a) Plant Crocus, hyacinth and daffodil bulbs and observe their growth progress. b) Put up feeders . c) Put up boxes for birds, bats and ladybirds. d) Create a log pile and a Leaf pile to provide a habitat for ‘mini beasts’ e) Create a wild flower bed. f) Create an Insect Hotel. g) Plant trees and shrubs h) Erect a bird bath near feeders i) Indicate on Habitat Map each development 2.
