DEBATE: AFFIRMATIVE REBUTTAL Your team has two goals during the rebuttal: 1. To refute (argue against your opponents’ points by showing the flaws and weaknesses in their argument) the negative’s attack on your case and your teams’ plan to strengthen your own arguments. 2. To reinforce the affirmatives’ solution, and the advantages to changing the current policy. Directions: Fill in the following information before (in black on this sheet) and during (purple part of this sheet) the debate. This the script that you will use to refute your opponents case. We the affirmative team, believe that our opponents have not provided enough strong examples to prove their case. For instance, one of the examples that the Negative team stated was: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ This does not prove that the current policy is problem-free. Obviously, the negative team doesn’t see just how big a problem the current law is causing this country. Also, although our opponents have presented statistics, they are not strong enough to support their case. For example, their statistic on: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Obviously, this is a weak statistic that attempts to hide the many problems with this current law. They also stated the disadvantage to changing this current law. They stated: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Would this really be a disadvantage or is it that they are afraid to change the current law? The Negative team does not like change and refuse to look at the positive outcomes from changing this law. Our case, on the other hand, offered strong reasons that showed why there is a major problem with the current law. One example that our team brought up was: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ This shows that there are major problems that exist with this current law. We also stated reliable and strong statistics that showed the seriousness of the problem. For instance, we stated: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ This clearly shows that major problems do exist within this weak law and it needs to be changed immediately. Finally, we believe that by changing the law on ________________________________________ will solve the current problem of ___________________________________________________ which we have mentioned in our earlier speeches. One of the many advantages to changing this law will be: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ We are confident that the judge and the audience will vote to change the current law and therefore we will win this case. Thank you for listening.
