Saratoga Cemetery
Webster Township, Hamilton County, Iowa
The Saratoga Cemetery is in Webster Township, Northwest of Stanhope, Iowa. It is located on a
gravel road at the junction of Inkpaduta Ave and 300th Street; a mile west of State Hwy 17 and about 4
miles north of County Road 56. Saratoga is a well kept, pretty cemetery, but does not have a name sign at
this time.
The cemetery is on the west side of Inkpaduta Ave surrounded by rich Iowa farm land. A small
drainage creek runs along the south side of the cemetery. The Saratoga Cemetery is an active cemetery;
however many Hamilton County pioneer are buried here. Saratoga is one of three cemeteries in Webster
Township.
In 1860, the land was given by Thomas Adams for the cemetery and church. The United Brethren
Church was built in a corner of the cemetery at a later time. When the Saratoga Cemetery was
established, graves from the nearby Duckett Cemetery and from Hamilton Cemetery (across the road
from Saratoga) were all moved to Saratoga. Today, there is no evidence of the Hamilton Cemetery.
The earliest burial found in the Saratoga Cemetery is a Civil War Veteran, James Duckett who died
Apr 14, 1866. There are 19 veterans from the Civil War, WWI, WWII and Vietnam wars laid to rest here
including Enoch Church, a War of 1812 veteran.
The cemetery is plotted in 6 sections; A, B and C on the north side of the driving path and D, E and
F on the south side. It is difficult to tell one section from the other. Cemetery listings are in West to East
rows starting with row #1 on the northwest side of the cemetery. There is a driving path in the middle of
cemetery and on the west side of the cemetery.
The cemetery was walked and photographed September 2012 by Jackie Frederick for the Hamilton
Heritage Hunters Genealogical Society. This cemetery list was transcribed from the township record for
the cemetery.
