Retro-trendy textiles
Bjørn Wiinblad is here, there and everywhere these days. Old original pieces are being combined with
contemporary new releases, and a current exhibition at Arken Museum of Modern Art highlights the
many sides and creative platforms of the talented multi-artist. Wiinblad had a particular fondness for
scenography, where he would apply his unique style to the creation of extravagant costumes. This
autumn, Bjørn Wiinblad Denmark lifts the curtain on a brand new textile universe based on Wiinblad’s
love of scenography, making beautiful and lively design statements out of the soft household items we
use every day, from tea towels to coated tablecloths.
It is often difficult to put creative people into a category. This is particularly true in the world of Danish
design, where even the greatest figures from Arne Jacobsen to Kay Bojesen defy categorisation with design
oeuvres ranging from entire buildings to furniture, clocks, wood and silver. Another member of this highly
creative club is Bjørn Wiinblad, who is making a serious comeback, not just a ceramicist, but as a multiartist within a wide range of media. With his enormous prolificness and creative zeal, Wiinblad could not
resist decorating everything around him, and nothing was too big or too small: from giant tapestries to tiny
matchboxes. This year, Bjørn Wiinblad Denmark is expanding the brand’s contemporary Wiinblad
interpretation to encompass yet another category, textiles, as a direct extension of Wiinblad’s own artistic
universe and to the delight of both new and old fans, who will be able to get the perfect Bjørn Wiinblad
dose to suit their tastes. From paper serviettes to porcelain products.
Dinner with Bjørn
Bjørn Wiinblad loved to be surrounded by people and nothing was left to chance when he lay the table for
guests. Each guest was given their own homemade place cards and the table settings were as extravagant
and inspiring as Wiinblad himself. Recreating such an experience in its entirety is not easy in contemporary
homes, especially with a busy lifestyle often ruled by what’s practical and easy. But with Bjørn Wiinblad
Denmark’s new textile collection, help is at hand for anyone longing for a splash of colourful magic before,
during and after the meal.
The collection is created for the kitchen and home, and comprises everything you need for cooking, serving
and clearing up. Table-setting is taken to new heights with decorative cork placemats, which spread
Wiinblad’s familiar motifs across the table and are easy to clean after use with a moist cloth. The same
functionality and motifs are also featured on the series’ acrylic-coated tablecloths with slip-proof backing,
which are sold by the metre and make it quick and easy to lay a table in contemporary retro style. In the
kitchen, cooking is made pretty and practical with an apron, oven mitt and potholders in printed cotton
that elegantly transport your culinary creations from the oven to the table, while the matching quilted
bread bag keeps your French loaves, rolls and buns warm. Complete the look with 3-ply paper serviettes
featuring Wiinblad motifs in mini-mosaics. These and all the pieces in the series make ideal gifts for the
design-loving host or hostess.
The series also includes a solid black chef’s apron featuring Bjørn Wiinblad’s playful and lively signature as a
striking and masculine motif. The apron is perfect for the gastro-man who has everything but prefers a
more discrete Wiinblad tribute as he works the stove.
