HEALTHCARE
All international students are required to have health insurance while in the U.S. Texas State
automatically signs international students up for the health insurance provided by the Health Center
on campus. If you do not want to be signed up for this health insurance because you have your own
you will need to complete a waiver on the Health Center website. Whether you have health
insurance from the Health Center or not all students are able to make appointments at the Health
Center & be seen by medical personnel for reasonable rates than at most hospitals.

*Other medical providers/ family doctors
If you would like treatment from a family doctor or specialist in the area you can also call the number
on your health insurance card to find doctor’s that are in your insurance network. Often times your
insurance will cover visits to doctors that are “In Network” much better than doctors who are out of
network so you if you have a specific doctor that you want to go to just ask your insurance company
if they are in network first. There are also ways to search for doctors in the area that are in your
network on your insurance companies’ website.
If you make an appointment at a doctor’s office in town, you can use the CARTS bus appointment if
you can a day in advance & tell them the location you need to get to and where they should meet
you. For more information on CARTS go to the transportation page

You should be aware of your options in the case that you find yourself sick on a weekend, a night or
a holiday when the Texas State Health Center is closed.
Urgent Care Facility:
If you get sick or injured on the weekend & the Health Clinic is not open another option is to go to a
Urgent Care facility, which is often more affordable than a hospital, especially if the person doesn’t
have insurance. An urgent care facility has more flexible hours than a regular doctor’s office or the
Health Center.
Examples of Urgent Conditions:
 Severe pain (chest, abdomen, head or ear), especially with fever
 Asthma (when not responding to usual medication)
 Urinary infection
 Possible fracture or dislocation
 Laceration (a cut requiring stitches)
 Major bee sting reaction - hives, wheezing, or swelling (e.g. whole arm or leg swells)
 Prolonged (24 hrs.) of vomiting/diarrhea - dehydration concern
 Persistent thoughts about committing harm to self or others
What to do:
 Call the Urgent Care center/Emergency Room first
 As soon as you arrive, indicate why you think it's urgent
 State the main problem first
 Report any past experience with the problem
 Bring any medications you have taken for the problem
