These services include the following: Screenings Evaluations Speech and/or Developmental Therapy sessions Resource materials Consultations with Families, teachers, and child care providers All services are at no cost to the parents. The Preschool Special Needs Classroom , located at Thomasville Primary School, is a component of the Exceptional Children’s Program. Operating Mon.- Thurs. from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the class follows the public school calendar. The staff includes one full time classroom teacher and two full time teacher assistants. The students follow a preschool curriculum based on the NC Foundations for Early Learning and Development, according to their Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s). This developmentally appropriate curriculum capitalizes on the child’s current capabilities, and modifies activities by providing materials and tasks that increase in complexity as the child gains new understanding and skills. The curriculum provides concrete activities for each child that stimulates all areas of developmentcognitive, fine motor, gross motor, language, self-help, and emotional/social. A multisensory approach to instruction is utilized in the classroom setting with the use of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile stimulation techniques. Health related services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy are provided either in pullout or in-class sessions. Transportation is provided by Thomasville City Schools. 2. Preschool Itinerant Services are provided to children who meet specific criteria based on NC Exceptional Children’s guidelines. The needs of these children can be met in their home, daycare, or service provider location. The Preschool Special Needs Program offers a variety of services to meet the educational needs of all eligible preschoolers. Early intervention plays a key role in helping preschoolers with disabilities.
