The Preschool Special
Needs Service Delivery
1. The Preschool Special Needs
Classroom , located at Thomasville
Primary School, is a component of the
Exceptional Children’s Program. Operating
Mon.- Thurs. from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m., the class follows the public school
calendar. The staff includes one full time
classroom teacher and two full time
teacher assistants. The students follow a
preschool curriculum based on the NC
Foundations for Early Learning and
Development, according to their
Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s). This
developmentally appropriate curriculum
capitalizes on the child’s current
capabilities, and modifies activities by
providing materials and tasks that increase
in complexity as the child gains new
understanding and skills. The curriculum
provides concrete activities for each child
that stimulates all areas of developmentcognitive, fine motor, gross motor,
language, self-help, and emotional/social.
A multisensory approach to instruction is
utilized in the classroom setting with the
use of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and
tactile stimulation techniques. Health
related services such as physical therapy,
occupational therapy, and
speech/language therapy are provided
either in pullout or in-class sessions.
Transportation is provided by
Thomasville City Schools.
2. Preschool Itinerant Services
are provided to children who meet
specific criteria based on NC
Exceptional Children’s guidelines. The
needs of these children can be met in
their home, daycare, or service
provider location.
The Preschool
Special Needs Program offers a
variety of services to meet the
educational needs of all eligible
preschoolers. Early intervention
plays a key role in helping
preschoolers with disabilities.
