Culture - Propagation of Unrooted Cuttings:


Rooting hormone is not necessary
Before callus formation there should be sufficient moisture in the rooting medium.
Provide media temperatures of 68-72˚F (20-22˚C).
Provide air temperatures of 70-80˚F (21-26˚C) days and 68-70˚F (20-21˚C) nights.
Relative humidity should be 75-90%.
Night mist may be required until callus formation or for 5-7 days.
Maintain 500-1.000 f.c. (5.4-11klux) of light.
Provide 16 hours days of lighting or use night interruption lighting to keep cuttings vegetative.
As roots form fertilize with 50-75 ppm 20-10-20.
In 14-21 days roots should have initiated. At this time misting frequency should be reduced
and night mist should be discontinued.
Increase light to 1,000-2,000 f.c. (11-22 klux).
Increase feed to 200 ppm alternating foliar feeds of 15-5-15 and 20-10-20.
Tone cuttings for 7 days once fully rooting with lower relative humidity and higher light (2,0003,000 f.c. [22-32 klux]).
Cuttings should be fully rooted and toned in 5 weeks.
Culture – Finishing:








Transplant rooted cuttings to a well-drained, sterile media.
Container sizes:
o 4”
1 PPP
o 6” or 1 gallon
1 PPP
o 8” or 10” HB
3-4 PPP
Temperatures:
o Establish warm and continue for 4-6 weeks at 75˚F (24˚C)
o Then reduce to 68-75˚F (20-24˚C) Days and 68-70˚F (20-21˚C) Nights
Light:
o Target 4,000 f.c. (43 klux) with moderate temperatures
o Reduce to 3,000 f.c. (32 klux) if temperatures exceed ideal range
o Shade for late spring production
Irrigation/relative humidity management:
o Keep foliage dry as much as possible
o Irrigation early in the day may lead to foliage burn
o Low relative humidity will burn foliage
Fertility:
o Alternate 150 ppm 15-5-15 Cal Mag and 21-5-20. Fertilizers with low levels of
phosphorus help to reduce stretch.
 Maintain EC at 1.0-1.5 mS/cm and pH at 5.6-6.0. Periodically leach to reduce
salts
Pinching:
o Soft pinch at 2-3 weeks for best plant habit
Spacing:
o Space plants pot tight for 2-4 weeks after transplant
o Space plants when foliage covers the container and before undesirable stretch
o Recommended spacing:
 4”
 6”
 8” and 10” HB




8” x 8”
12” x 12”
18” x 18”
Photoperiod
o Maintain 16 hour days or use night interruption lighting before April 1st until plants are
two-thirds the desired finished height.
o Remove any flower buds that initiate prematurely.
Height control:
o B-Nine, Bonzi, Cycocel or A-Rest. Consult labels for recommended rates.
 Avoid late applications which can distort flowers.
o Responsive to DIF treatments.
o Reduced fertility rates and slight moisture stress will also help control height
Pests and Diseases:
o Pests – Mealybugs, thrips, and whiteflies
o Diseases – Botrytis, powdery mildew, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and INSV/TSWV
Scheduling from transplant:
o 4”
12-14 weeks
o 6”/gallons
14-16 weeks
o 8-10” HB
14-16 weeks
