Contact: Ken Dean, Western Farm Show Manager Kansas FFA Chapters Collect 865 Food Items For 2015 Western Farm Show Border Battle Food Drive The more than 900 Kansas FFA members who attended the 2015 Western Farm Show held recently in Kansas City, Mo., played an important role in the overall success of the show’s annual “Border Battle” food drive. The 18 participating Kansas chapters collected and delivered 865 cans and other non-perishable food items for the drive. Combined with the collections of 76 participating Missouri FFA chapters, the drive produced 7,642 pounds of food – enough to provide 6,368 meals. This total represented twice as many pounds of food as that collected by FFA participants at the 2014 Western Farm Show. Food collections were turned over to Harvesters Community Food Network, a regional food bank based in Kansas City that serves a 26-county area of northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. “All of the participating FFA chapters can be very proud of this achievement and the knowledge that their efforts will directly help many in our region who are fighting hunger,” said Cory Haves, Vice President of Training and Education for the Western Equipment Dealers Association, which owns and produces the Western Farm Show. “We commend all of these students and their advisors for the hard work and dedication they have shown in making this year’s Western Farm Show food drive such a huge success.” (Insert Kansas FFA quote). Top Performing Chapters Kansas leading chapters included Southeast FFA with 542 donated items and Ft. Scott FFA with 125 items. The chapter with the highest total for both states was Lone Jack, Mo., with 1,944 items. The larger number of Missouri FFA chapters were able to claim “bragging rights” in this year’s Border Battle Food Drive because they had the highest combined collections.
