The small domestic market means that foreign trade is of central importance to businesses based in the Principality. International agreements guarantee access to important markets, with Liechtenstein’s companies enjoying direct access to the EU/EEA Single Market and its free movement of people, goods, services and capital. In accordance with the provisions of the customs treaty concluded with Switzerland, the Swiss franc is the official currency in Liechtenstein and the two countries share a common customs area. Triple A rating and a ‘job miracle’ Instead of public debt, Liechtenstein has financial reserves. It is characterised by political continuity and liberal economic policies. In 2014, Standard & Poor's confirmed the Principality’s AAA rating and emphasised the country’s stable economic outlook. Surprisingly, Liechtenstein has roughly as many jobs as inhabitants. Of the 36,000 jobs in the country, slightly less than half are carried out by workers living in Liechtenstein. The other half – more than 18,000 jobs – are filled by workers who live in one of the neighbouring regions (St. Gallen in Switzerland, Vorarlberg in Austria and the area around Lake Constance in southern Germany) and commute to Liechtenstein every day.
