Office of Student Services February 10, 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian: You have contacted the Early Intervention Program of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) regarding concerns about your child. The MCIU Early Intervention Program provides educational services to children who have a disability and are in need of specially designed instruction. Special education eligibility for preschool is a two pronged decision. Disabilities may include: Autism, Visual Impairment including Blindness, Deaf/Blindness, Hearing Impairment including Deafness, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injury, Orthopedic Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Serious Emotional Disturbance, Specific Learning Disability, and Speech or Language Impairment. A child at the preschool level may also have a disability of a developmental delay. Developmental delay is defined as a delay of 25% in one or more areas of cognition, motor, speech/language, social, or self-help skills. The second prong of preschool eligibility is a need for special education and related services. If you believe your child has a disability and is in need of specially designed instruction (special education), please complete the Child and Family Profile form. If your child is in a preschool or day care program, please ask the teacher or caregiver to fill out the Teacher/Caregiver Questionnaire. You will be contacted by an Early Intervention secretary to schedule a screening. This screening is a brief assessment procedure to determine if additional assessments are required. Thank you for contacting the MCIU Early Intervention Program. Very Truly Yours, Early Intervention Department
