I. Objectives
A. To provide an opportunity for the nursing student to observe the role of the nurse in the pediatric
same day surgery (SDS) setting. In addition, the student will accompany the patient to surgery
and to the recovery area.
B. To provide an opportunity for the student to apply developmental theory by interacting with the
child and family before and after surgery.
C. To learn the action and side effects of preoperative medications as well as medication
calculations and age- appropriate medication administration.
D. To participate in pediatric nursing assessments pre and post-operatively, and prepare the
child for outpatient surgery.
E. To complete a written post-operative discharge plan, and instruct the pediatric patient and family.
II. Guidelines
A. Students will be assigned to the pediatric Same Day Surgery (SDS) area by their clinical
Instructor when there are surgeries on the schedule. The surgery schedule is not available on the
pediatric floor usually till about 5pm. Review the diagnosis, type of surgery, developmental needs
of that child, and the expected plan of care.
B.
If surgery is scheduled for 0730 or 0800, students are expected to arrive at the hospital on
their SDS day at 6:15am and go to the locker rooms on 2nd floor near Same Day Surgery to
change into scrubs. You should meet up with the pediatric same-day surgery nurse and/or
your instructor in the pediatric area of SDS at 6:20am. Unless otherwise directed by your
instructor.
C. Most of the children are recovered on the pediatric unit. You will meet up with your clinical group
at this time. If your child is not recovered on the peds unit, call your instructor for guidelines. You
will attend post-conference with your clinical group at the end of the day.
D. Look up medication information, including drug class, mode of administration, proper pediatric
dosages, and side effects, PRIOR TO CLINICAL on the two drugs, ATROPINE and
VERSED(Midazolam).
E.
You must turn in a Journal including information on the child’s surgical procedure,
developmental tasks and appropriate diversion, pertinent hx describing rationale for surgery.
Speak to the 4 outcome abilities as directed on the Journal guidelines.
