Specifically, it looks at materials on the subject of Nursing – Education and Research, corresponding to the Library of Congress classes RT71-RT81.5. To find materials within this class range in WorldCat, the following search strategy was used: lc: RT71 OR lc: RT72 OR lc: RT73 OR lc: RT73.5 OR lc: RT73.7 OR lc: RT74 OR lc: RT74.5 OR lc: RT74.7 OR lc: RT75 OR lc: RT76 OR lc: RT77 OR lc: RT78 OR lc: RT79 OR lc: RT80 OR lc: RT81 OR lc: RT81.5 and cg: 07 and ((dt= “bks”) or (dt= “ser”)) Results were limited to materials held at 50 or more libraries. Materials were also limited to books and serial publications. This search returned 1,354 records. The collections of five libraries were analyzed with respect to their materials on nursing education and research. The libraries are all affiliated with universities with nursing schools in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Three of these schools (University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore) have nationally ranked nursing research programs, while the remaining two (Drexel University and Jefferson University) are less well-known. The OCLC symbols for these schools are: University of Pennsylvania (PAU), Johns Hopkins (JHW), University of Maryland, Baltimore (MDU), Drexel University (HHN), and Jefferson University (TVJ). Some of these symbols are different than those for the main libraries (notably Johns Hopkins and Drexel), as the medical collections are considered separate from the rest of the schools’ holdings. The University of Pennsylvania, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and Jefferson University all scored higher on the coverage power test. Johns Hopkins, however, went from a research level collection to an instructional collection. Drexel University’s collection remained more or less the same regardless of the test used. Because the coverage power test looks at the library’s entire collection instead of only 40 items, it is likely that the levels for the coverage power test are a more accurate measure of each library’s collection than is the brief test. Interestingly, almost all titles selected were identified to be in the range for the Instructional level (0.51-0.75). This included Basic titles that have a higher audience level than expected as well as Research titles that have a lower audience level than expected. While most items were in the Instructional range, the audience levels did increase as holding counts decreased, as would be expected.
