Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of the course, it is expected that the student can:
1. Apply standards of nursing practice while functioning as a safe entry level nurse.

3. Utilize effective communication techniques with patients, family, and members of the
healthcare team.

UNIT I: Cardiovascular Nursing
Objectives:
1. Determine the clinical significance and related nursing implications of the various tests and
procedures used for diagnostic assessment of cardiac function.
2. Identify common cardiac arrhythmias and describe treatment modalities for them.
3. Differentiate between coronary artery disease (CAD), angina pectoris, and myocardial
infarction.
4. Describe pathophysiological and compensatory mechanisms of ventricular failure.
5. Describe the nursing assessment, nursing interventions and desired patient outcomes for the
cardiac surgery patient.
6. Apply knowledge of the nursing management for patients with hypertension, emphasizing client
education.
7. Differentiate between venous and arterial vascular diseases and nursing management of each.

NURSING CARE OF THE PATIENT WITH ENDOCRINE DISORDERS

Identify the biologic effects that occur when there is a deficit or excess of endocrine hormones.
Describe the systemic effects that occur with the pharmacological use of corticosteroid therapy.

endocrine problems.
UNIT III.
NURSING CARE OF THE PATIENT WITH ONCOLOGY PROBLEMS
OBJECTIVES:
Explore one’s own attitudes and feelings about death and dying.
Discuss different beliefs associated with death and dying based on client age and culture.
Discuss the pathophysiology, risk factors and prevention of various cancers.
Explain the rationale for the four major types of cancer therapy and discuss the nursing care of
patients receiving these therapies.
5. Specify nursing strategies that are appropriate for assisting patients to develop/maintain a
positive self-image and body image.
6. Implement nursing interventions that optimize the quality of life for the dying patient.
7. Differentiate between the various hematologic malignancies and describe treatment modalities,
nursing interventions, and patient outcomes.
