New Manual Flushometer Toilet Systems from
American Standard Conserve Water,
Contribute to LEED Points
Industry-first 1.1 GPF Manual Flush Valve Works with Afwall and Madera Toilets;
Uses 31 Percent Less Water; Reduces Clogging and Maintenance
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 31, 2013) – American Standard is the first
plumbing manufacturer to offer 1.1 gallons per flush (gpf) manual flushometer toilet
systems that use 14 percent less water than 1.28 gpf high efficiency toilet (HET)
flushometer systems, and 31 percent less than 1.6 gpf
systems. These ground-breaking toilet systems consist
of a 1.1 gpf manual toilet flush valve combined with
either an American Standard Afwall or Madera universal
toilet bowl.
An ideal solution for architects and specifying
engineers focused on water conservation, these new
toilet system flush valves significantly reduce water use
without sacrificing performance. This level of water
savings will contribute toward LEED points, even in

areas that are required to use 1.28 gpf toilets, such as
Texas and California. These 1.1 gpf flushometer
systems offer excellent drainline carry and have been
proven to successfully flush 800 grams of waste in
Maximum Performance Testing (MaP), an independent report of toilet bulk removal

This new American Standard 1.1 gpf flush valve features a reliable self-cleaning
piston with an integral wiper spring that cleans the refill orifice with every flush,
significantly reducing maintenance and the risk of clogging. This represents a significant
improvement over typical flush valves containing a rubber diaphragm prone to clogging,
warping and cracking, thus requiring regular maintenance. The water volume used by
competitors’ flush valves can also increase over time due to the deterioration of this
diaphragm. The American Standard piston valves provide precise metering to deliver the
promised water savings over an extended period of usage.
Offering further reduction in maintenance time, both the Afwall and Madera toilet
bowls feature EverClean, the permanent anti-microbial finish available exclusively from
American Standard. EverClean inhibits the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria,
mold and mildew on the surface, helping toilets stay cleaner, longer.
The 1.1 gpf manual flush valve also includes smart features to help prevent
potential flooding and water waste: fail-safe piston valves that remain closed following a
loss of water pressure and an ADA-compliant, non-hold open handle that provides
automatic shut-off after every flush.
