Photosynthesis/Cellular Respiration Notes
Photosynthesis
Plants make and store food (glucose) by using energy from the sun, water and carbon
dioxide. This process occurs in the chloroplasts.
Photosynthesis Equation:
CO2+H2O+sunlight
C6H12O6+O2
Plants get the water they need from the water in the ground. Water enters plants
through the roots.
Carbon dioxide enters the plants through stomata on the underside of leaves.
Stomata are tiny openings that allow gas exchange.
Oxygen and water exit the plant through the stomata.
Plants perform cellular respiration at night to break down and use the food (glucose)
that was made and stored during the day.
Cellular respiration
Cellular respiration is the process by which living organisms break down and use food
(glucose). This process occurs in the mitochondria. Both plants and animals do
cellular respiration.
Equation for cellular respiration:
O2+C6H12O6
ATP+CO2+H2O
ATP=energy
Does one process depend on the other? YES!
Animals must have the oxygen that is produced by photosynthesis to use for cellular
respiration in order to break down food. The plant needs the carbon dioxide that is
produced from cellular respiration to perform photosynthesis to make and store food .
