Art Registrar Position Opening for the Ulrich Museum of Art
Job Description and Position Summary
The Ulrich Museum of Art, a dynamic modern and contemporary art museum located on the campus of
Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, seeks a skilled and team-oriented Art Registrar to oversee
all aspects of the permanent collection’s care, safety, and documentation and to manage and execute
incoming and outgoing loans. The Art Registrar reports to the museum director and works
collaboratively with the curator of modern and contemporary art and the designer/preparator.
The Ulrich Museum of Art is the premier venue for modern and contemporary art in Wichita and south
central Kansas. It was founded in 1974 by Wichita State University, an urban-serving research institution
committed to learning for the largest metropolitan area in Kansas. The founding coincided with the
facility opening for the art museum and School of Art and Design, a shared building with galleries, offices,
and classrooms. The museum and its entrance are clearly identified by a 26 x 52 ft. glass-and-marble
mosaic by Joan Miró. A professional staff of eight with a $1.8 million annual budget works diligently to
engage and inspire an annual audience of 25,000. The museum boasts 7,500 sq. feet of galleries and
presents from 8 to 10 exhibitions each year. The permanent collection numbers 7,000 artworks with
76 large-scale sculptures in the nationally recognized campus sculpture garden.
Responsibilities
Artwork Care
• Monitors art storage and exhibition spaces for temperature/humidity, environmental hazards,
safety, cleanliness, and ongoing maintenance concerns
• Maintains and regularly updates the museum’s facilities report, and maintains an accurate
up-to-date inventory of the collection and all object locations
• Maintains complete visual and written documentation of all collection objects in both hardcopy object files and on the museum’s database
• Monitors the condition of works in the outdoor sculpture collection and coordinates with
university physical plant staff and contract conservators to address any problems, including
annual maintenance
• Assumes proper packing, shipping, and insurance for all artworks entering or exiting the
museum; maintains their written and visual condition reports
• Manages all incoming and outgoing loan records
Data and Policy Management
•Manages and develops the museum’s object database (MuseumPlus) with the goal of not
merely documenting and tracking objects, but also making the database a rich repository of
information
• Develops and implements an object photography project to add images to all object records
• Handles incoming and out-going requests for object information and images, including rights
and reproduction requests
• Evaluates, updates, and implements the museum’s Disaster Plan and Collection Management
Policy
Other Duties
• Serves as staff liaison to the Outdoor Sculpture Committee and in an advisory capacity to the
Collection Committee
• Assists with special events and programs as needed
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, or related field with three years experience or museum
studies/collection management degree with two years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree or higher in museum studies, collection management, or related field
• Five years experience in art museum registration and collections management with a thorough
knowledge of best practices in conservation, insurance, object handling, and museum legal and ethical
issues
• Exceptional attention to detail and organization
• Ability to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced work environment
• Extensive knowledge of and experience with collection database software
• Comfortable working on both Windows and Mac platforms
• Experience with imaging software, such as Adobe Photoshop and iPhoto
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility
Salary: $38,000-$42,000 Offer contingent upon successful background check.
