2014 SOUTHEASTERN IDAHO HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST SPONSORED BY IDAHO SECTION, AMERICAN NUCLEAR SOCIETY As the next generation of technologically informed citizens, scientists or engineers, the future is in your hands. Nuclear energy plays an important role in meeting our current and future energy needs. While nuclear energy is a mature technology, research continues in many areas. This essay competition is designed to help you better understand important aspects of current research and nuclear issues. ESSAY TOPIC: What role might commercial nuclear power play in controlling greenhouse gas emissions in the United States? Compare nuclear energy to other energy sources in terms of carbon dioxide emissions in both the near term, and longer term. You might consider well-established sources like hydropower, along with growing energy sources like wind and solar. (This essay should not be the place to debate climate change or the role of humans in climate change.) How is the Idaho National Laboratory involved in research related to emissions reduction? Briefly, how might you contribute to this technology/industry in the future? AWARDS & PRESENTATIONS: Scholarships will be awarded for the best essay at each of two levels; 9th and 10th grade; and 11th and 12th grade. The winner at each level will receive a $1500 scholarship. Winners will be notified by email in January. Each winner (and their parents) will be invited to a dinner and scholarship presentation at the January 29, 2015 Idaho American Nuclear Society (IANS) meeting in Idaho Falls. Essay Requirements Length: Maximum 2,500 words, minimum 1,500 words. Word Processor: Microsoft Word or Compatible Format: Each essay must include at least three references, one of which must be from a journal, and one figure, explained in the text. Format the essay in 12 point font and double spaced. Submission Criteria: Participating students will submit original work that reflects the implications of the essay topic. Cover page: Will be the completed Essay Entry Form. Page two: Will include the Essay title, followed by the body of the essay. NOTE: To ensure each applicant and essay receives fair judging DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON PAGE 2 Essays and the entry form may be submitted as an attachment(s) and emailed to Danielle.Perez@inl.gov.
