ESSAY CONTEST
SPONSORED BY
IDAHO SECTION, AMERICAN NUCLEAR SOCIETY
As the next generation of technologically informed citizens, scientists or engineers, the future is in your hands.
Nuclear energy plays an important role in meeting our current and future energy needs. While nuclear energy
is a mature technology, research continues in many areas. This essay competition is designed to help you
better understand important aspects of current research and nuclear issues.
ESSAY TOPIC: What role might commercial nuclear power play in controlling greenhouse gas emissions in the
United States? Compare nuclear energy to other energy sources in terms of carbon dioxide emissions in both
the near term, and longer term. You might consider well-established sources like hydropower, along with
growing energy sources like wind and solar. (This essay should not be the place to debate climate change or
the role of humans in climate change.) How is the Idaho National Laboratory involved in research related to
emissions reduction? Briefly, how might you contribute to this technology/industry in the future?
AWARDS & PRESENTATIONS: Scholarships will be awarded for the best essay at each of two levels; 9th and 10th grade; and
11th and 12th grade. The winner at each level will receive a $1500 scholarship. Winners will be notified by email in
