MSC is currently searching for an Animal Care Training Coordinator to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Hamilton, Montana. The Animal Care Training Coordinator will work in collaboration with the NIH staff, and will be responsible for the expansion and further development and implementation of the current animal care and use training program, ensuring that both researcher and staff training meets regulatory agency, institutional regulations/policies, and current standard operating procedures and requirements (SOPs). The successful candidate will provide leadership and expertise working collaboratively with staff to develop and expand training program objectives, and to produce effective classroom, hands-on workshops and online learning modules related to research animal care and use. The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of accepted standards and practices of laboratory animal care, biosafety, emergency preparedness, and laboratory animal facility operations, and have demonstrated experience providing training in a biomedical research or academic setting. The successful candidate must also have experience in instructional design, and use of various teaching modalities, including didactic, computer-based, and practical training. Experience with web-based Learning Management System (LMS) and content delivery systems; ability to work diplomatically with a wide range of people; demonstrated effective writing, editing, and computer skills; and previous use of, or a willingness to learn, specialized applications used for delivery of computer-based training are also required. Additional job responsibilities include working one on one with researchers, and Clinical Veterinarians. A component of this job also involved preparation and management of regulatory documents (AALAC, USDA, PHS and other local and federal agencies) and the annual review of animal facility SOPs, training and documenting that staff have been trained accordingly. Will serve as the Institute’s backup Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) coordinator. Duties and Responsibilities: Develop a thorough understanding and provide insight to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep abreast of changes to SOPs. Responsible for training manual (guidance document) creation, review and revision of all documents every three years (or more frequent if necessary). Assist in the development of a training plan for each position in the animal facilities. Work with Facility Management to identify and prioritize topics for technical training. Prepare lesson plans (hands-on demonstrations, instructional classroom, or a combination of these) and develop new training topics for each unit of the animal care staff, and make them available to every employee. Ensure that each employee is trained and proficient in the current SOPs required of their position. Provide retraining and cross-training for individual employees when needed. Maintain and manage proper documentation of all training, proficiency and competency events for each employee in accordance with the training database(s) and employee training files. Provide reports for quality assurance animal facility walk-throughs on a monthly basis. Conduct training for employees who are newly hired, have changed job positions, have transferred from other facilities, and provide special training to correct deficiencies. Conduct employee competency assessments to determine appropriate knowledge base to meet the performance criteria of their position. Responsible for ensuring proficiency standards of staff are met and maintained at an appropriate frequency to conduct in vivo studies. Assist employees with completing security clearances and NIH mandated training courses. Provide IACLUC training for new principal investigators and online protocol system training. Identify training program gaps and opportunities. Assist in safety training implementation for all staff. Conduct presentations as needed, audience varies. Provide and perform other training or duties as requested. Position Requirements: Experience with multiple animal species, both husbandry and technical expertise. Must have experience in laboratory animal care, facilities operations/management, biohazard containment and data management. Experience with animal biosafety level 3 preferred. Must be able to complete an intensive background investigation through the National Agency Check and Inquiries (ANACI) and pass a security risk assessment through the FBI and Criminal Justice Information Services Division. Must have a B.S. degree or equivalent.
