Students ask open-ended research questions and develop a plan for answering them. Students are expected to: (A) brainstorm, consult with others, decide upon a topic, and formulate a major research question to address the major research topic; and (B) formulate a plan for engaging in research on a complex, multi-faceted topic. Do first: Journal entry (7 minutes): “What is your current opinion of standardized testing, based on your recent experience with STAAR and the other tests you’ve taken in the past? Explain.” 2. Think pair share: students discuss their answers with a table partner and then share out as a whole class; discussion should be kept under 10 minutes. 3. Pass out and read NEUTRAL article on standardized testing; discuss and take notes using “just the facts” graphic organizer 4. Introduce MLA format.
