Mayor’s Weekly Update
March 6, 2010
During this relatively dry spell, City street crews are busy trying to get cold patches down on the
roads to give some temporary relief to the winter’s damage. They are also noting and recording
long-term repair requirements that can be addressed once the weather permits hot asphalt repairs
to be made. With the limited number of personnel available, we still need your assistance in
locating needed repairs. If you see a new pot hole in the road surface please call the City Help
Desk at 417-532-2156 and let us know where it is at. Thank you.
Waste water/sewer crews are also busy checking the waste water/sewer systems. These activities
include running cameras through the system, conducting visual checks, and conducting smoke
checks. The smoke checks are generally done by neighborhoods and we notify you in a number
of ways to include door hangers, newspaper and radio announcements, and posting on the City
website with the dates and anticipated times and locations (please note that the smoke tests will
only be conducted during daylight hours). People occasional mistake the smoke that sometimes
back pressures into their homes as being fire smoke, which is why we make the effort to notify
you of these waste water/sewer system smoke checks. The smoke that is used does not have a
strong fire/smoke smell and is generally of a whiter color than a fire’s smoke as there is no
burning of materials. We have investigated the use of color smoke but our research indicates that
the color creates a potential for staining of paint and fabrics and could cause unnecessary
damage. The current smoke that we use does not create this problem but can be mistaken for a
fire’s smoke. The cause of the smoke infiltration that I have had explained to me is that the water
traps in a home’s waste water system are not charged with water and therefore the smoke and
drift backwards into a home or business. If doubt about the origin of smoke that you may notice
in your home or business, call the fire department (911).
As spring is just around the corner, the storm water crews are out inspecting the storm water runoff system too. As most of us know, the spring rains can be very heavy. This means our storm
water system needs to be functioning at its best to remove this rain water and preventing flooding
of our roads, homes, and businesses. We are asking again for your help in cleaning the grates of
the system that may be in front of your home and remove the debris and other items that may be
blocking the drainage. If you have a stream, creek, or any other type of natural runoff on your
property, the City crews can not clean that area for you. Be a good neighbor and clean those
areas of any debris. The home that you may prevent from being flooded by spring rains may be
yours or your neighbors.
The Lebanon YMCA has a number of activities coming up to include a swimming lesson
sampler and lifeguard courses. For more information contact the Y at 417-588-1177 or visit their
website, www.orymca.org.
The Civic Center also has a number of activities scheduled for the coming week, you may view
those in the calendar section of the City’s website.
Next City Council will be Monday March 15th. Major items on the agenda will include the 1st
quarter budget and appropriations amendments.
