Chapter 2 Research River, a water flowing on the Earth’s surface. They shape their own channels, and they come out of different shapes, and sizes. All rivers and streams start at some high point. The high point can be a mountain, hill or other elevated area. Water from some source like a spring, snow melt or a lake starts at this high point and begins to flow down to lower points. (Grolier Encyclopedia; Nature Works; USGS Water Science For School) Erosion, the process that moves weathered sediments from one location to another. Erosion helps river shape its channel, specifically, water erosion. Water, erodes more sediments than any other agent of erosion. (Merrill Earth Science) The faster the water moves, the greater the chance that it’ll erode more, and big objects. There are said to be four types of water erosion. Rill Erosion, Gully Erosion, Streambank Erosion, and InterRill Erosion. (College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension) River, erodes its sides and banks. Erosion, is the weathering of sediments and are carried away by the them. When vertical erosion occur, the channel is deeper and thus the river can handle more water. When lateral erosion occurs, the sides are eroded, and the channel is widen. (River Erosion, Library Think Quest) Quarry, a type of open-pit mine from which rocks are being extracted. Quarries are generally used for extracting building materials, such as dimension stone, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, and gravel. ( Wikipedia) But, in Philippines, River quarry are usually done. In different rivers that you’d pass by, there are always been a bunch of people, who’d be living under the bridge, just to be near with their work. There are different quarries, different types, and different quarry equipment. The work depends on the type of rock being extracted, the surroundings, the size of the pit, and the geography and geology of the area. Erosion can affect the channel characteristics of the river. River Depth and Width depends on the erosion rate of the river. There are two kinds of erosion that affects the depth of the river.First, the vertical erosion. And, second, the Streambank Erosion. River Width are also affected because of the lateral erosion. Water Characteristics are also affected by erosion. Turbidity, is the cloudness or haziness of a fluids caused by individual particles (suspended solids) that are invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in the air. Turbidity in open water may be caused by growth of phytoplankton. Human activities that disturb land, such as construction, can lead to high sediment levels entering water bodies during rain storms due to storm water runoff. ( Wikipedia)
