“The hidden world of functional disorders”
Wednesday 19th August |3pm-4pm| Venue 372 - The Stand in the Square|
Tickets: £8 (7) @ www.edfringe.com and www.thestand.co.uk
How would you feel if you were paralysed or had blackouts, only to be told you were
imagining it, hysterical, or making it up? This is still the experience of some patients with
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a very real but misunderstood condition that affects
15% of UK neurology outpatients. In spite of being relatively common, FND is remarkably
hidden from public view. Dr Jon Stone brings this illness out of the shadows. Hear the
science and lift the stigma.
“The hidden world of functional disorders” is part of a series of shows focused around
provocative statements and debate - The Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas. The cabaret is a
compilation of 24 interactive shows where challenging questions are posed and answers are
sought. It is curated by the Beltane Public Engagement Network, produced by Fair Pley and
compared by Comedienne Susan Morrison. The audience is encourage to speak up and
shake the grey matter while debating with some of Scotland’s fiercest intellectuals.
Dr Jon Stone is a Consultant Neurologist (NHS Lothian) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the
University of Edinburgh, NRS Career Research Fellow and Founder of UK-FNS - UK wide research
group for functional disorders. He works with the Edinburgh team who carry out clinical research on a
wide range of functional disorders, looking at how common they are, why and how they happen and
trialing physical and psychological treatments. He is also committed to the promotion of local and
global policies to increase patient information, raise public awareness in the media, reduce stigma,
and provide better training, service, and research and classification structures.
