“The Cocaine Conspiracy”

The cocaine trade has enormous social and ecological consequences at both global and
local scales. Western governments have been pursuing the so-called “war on drugs” for
many years, at a cost of billions of dollars, but how successful has this approach been? Is a
hard line approach the only solution? Join Karina Banda, Julieth Serrano and Maria
Fernanda Torres to discuss the situation in Columbia and alternative approaches to tackling
the problem.
“The Cocaine Conspiracy” is part of a series of shows focused around provocative
statements and debate - The Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas. The cabaret is a compilation of
24 interactive shows where challenging questions are posed and answers are sought. It is
curated by the Beltane Public Engagement Network, produced by Fair Pley and compared
by Comedienne Susan Morrison. The audience is encourage to speak up and shake the
grey matter while debating with some of Scotland’s fiercest intellectuals.
Karina Banda is a Colombian Biologist, with experience running a local NGO and working on
Biodiversity Conservation projects and initiatives in Education and Science Communication. She is
PhD Student at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and University of Edinburgh. Her research is
about macroecology applied to the conservation of the Tropical Dry Forest, one of the most
threatened ecosystems in the world, trying to influence policy-making in Colombia.
