The goal is for students to finish the course with an understanding of: How to get, keep, and leave a job- Introduction Your First Job (and maybe the next two!) You won't start at the top! Finding Work- Ads, cold calling, networking; create your resume, apply for work Get that Job- Interview time! Interview prep Keep your Job (and advance!) Hard and soft skills, employer expectations How to Leave (Time to Move On?)- positive exit with a recommendation, not burned bridges! Who are You? Vocational assessment, skill and interest surveys and profiles, matching the person to the job, reality checks, related occupations I expect each student to: 1. Start or update their vocational portfolio 2. Create a resume 3. Know how to find jobs and research job descriptions; add the good ones to the portfolio 4. Understand that their first jobs must prove that they can be a good worker 5. Know how to apply for a job and set up an interview 6. Understand the need present to themselves well and be responsive during the interview 8. Know what to expect when beginning a new job 9. Be aware that being a good worker goes beyond performing merely adequately- politeness, cooperation, good production rate, good quality, on task, SAFE! 10. Know that there will be a time to leave (moving, better job, need full-time) and that there is a right way, yielding a recommendation and paving the way for the next job 11. Learn who they are, vocationally, and add the information to the portfolio 12. Learn about different occupational fields, individual jobs, related occupations and the requirements and demands of those jobs 13. Understand why matching individual skills, abilities, and interests to the requirements of a job is important in the long term.
