Bamford School is uniquely located with the estuary and river at its doorstep. We are the jewel in the crown of the Ferrymead region. The school is a full primary, with children attending aged from 5 to 13 years. We have a commitment to providing high quality education for children in this age range. We are proud to be a full primary school, as we believe that the younger children benefit from having older children in the school to support them and to provide positive role models. The senior pupils benefit by being able to develop leadership skills through programmes offered at the school such as peer mediation, buddy reading, school patrols and being librarians. The school values the partnership between parents, children and teachers. It is essential that we all work together to provide the best education available. One of the best ways to do this is through open communication. It is important that you contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. At the beginning of the year parents are able to attend an informal evening, to learn about the programmes for the year. During the year there will be scheduled interviews, however if you have any concerns please do not wait but contact the teacher and make an appointment as soon as possible. At Bamford School we have a highly committed and skilled staff. Parents are welcomed into Bamford School. We are fortunate at our school to have parents and community members available to help in the classrooms as well as a small but very active team of fundraisers who raise funds and provide many resources for the children. Bamford has a proud tradition of achievement, and this is made possible by setting high standards for pupils both academically and socially. Our role in education is to ensure pupils are able to meet the challenges of an ever changing world. We have a commitment to literacy and numeracy success for all pupils within the school. We hope the information in this package helps you to know and understand our school, but if there is any further information you require please do not hesitate to contact me. Images of students and/or their work are published to recognise student achievement, report on learning to the school and wider community, and to promote the school. The following guidelines help us to protect our students: The school seeks parents' written consent before their child's photo or work is published online. Parents give this consent at enrolment, or as needed if the child is already enrolled, by completing the Student Information Consent form. Parents can withdraw their consent at any time. The school takes special care with personal information about students, that is, information that identifies an individual. With consent, we share no more than a student’s first name and/or photograph via the newsletter, or the wider online community via the school website. The school publishes photos and students' work that positively depict the student and school. The school seeks students' consent before publishing their work. As the author of a copyright work, a student has the right to be identified when their work is exhibited in public, such as on the internet. At Bamford School we prefer to identify the student by their first name and year at school only to protect their privacy. Requests for a child's full name to be published are considered by the privacy officer. If the school is aware of a special circumstance regarding a student's presence at the school, such as a court order preventing access to the child, any information that could identify the child is kept out of the website/newsletters. office@bamford.school.nz www.bamford.school.nz School Number: 3288 Bamford Primary School Gould Crescent, CHRISTCHURCH 8023 Phone:(03) 9820206 Fax:(03) 9820208 The C.A.R.E Programme The CARE Programme has been implemented as part of our Bully – Free Environment Initiatives. The programme provides supports for students with their learning and social skills. The programme aims to help form positive attitudes to learning and other people. The CARE awards recognise successes and effort in four key areas of school life. Citizenship: good manners, sharing, leadership, tolerance, supporting others. Achievement: outstanding work, a personal best, improved quality, creativity. Responsibility: punctuality, teamwork, self-discipline, cooperation Effort: trying hard, commitment, initiative, giving your best. The C.A.R.E awards programme is structured around the New Zealand Curriculum with a special focus on the key competencies, specifically thinking, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing. The C.A.R.E awards programme also reinforces the attitudes and values components of the New Zealand Curriculum Framework. Preparing for life long learning: The three essential skills targeted above are skills that all people associated with children’s learning see as highly desirable in student development. They are essential skills for developing a child’s independence in learning and empower them to have greater control over the learning process. They are practical life skills that will stand children in great stead in future learning well beyond their formal schooling days. Social Development: Peer Relationship, Developing Responsibility: The C.A.R.E awards programme is also aimed at specifically developing children’s skills in the area of social responsibility. Each child is assisted, guided and encouraged to develop effective and meaningful relationships with their peers and their teachers. These attributes are essential for effective home and school life and a prerequisite for positive entry into the workforce and New Zealand society. Award Criteria: The award criteria are displayed in every classroom in the school after having been discussed in depth. There are three different levels of criteria used in each area of the school: Junior, Middle and Senior. Each child works individually at gaining a Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificate during the year. office@bamford.school.nz www.bamford.school.nz School Number: 3288 DISCOVERING SCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME The first day at school is a memorable day and a huge step in your child’s life. School can be a strange and exciting place and it is natural for them (and you) to feel a little nervous. You can help your child look forward to school by talking with them about the wonderful and new experiences they will have, new friends to play with, sports, lots of fun and new things to learn and do. Focus on the positives and avoid using school as a threat, for example “The teacher will tell you off for saying that” or “You wont be able to do that at school. Make starting school enjoyable. School visits prior to starting are encouraged by schools to introduce your child to their class and to meet the teacher. Whilst at school, take your child to the toilets to check these out and check with the teacher how to ask or indicate when wanting to go to the toilet. Make sure for safety reasons you organise with your child and teacher a pick-up spot for after school (usually the classroom). These pre-school visits will ease the transition from home to school life and preparation in these early school visits about what will happen can and will lessen anxieties. Make sure they have clothes that are labeled with their name and are easily manageable. For example, shoes with Velcro instead of laces. Tools such as pencils and exercise books at school are important. Make sure your child has these. Explain to your child that they will have to sit quietly at times, put their hands up to ask or answer questions and about the school bells and what these mean. Double check that they know how to ask to go to the toilet. On the first morning it is important to take your child to school. This day is a big step in their independence and they will appreciate you being there. Spending part of a day at school once a week will often help your child settle into class much better (if possible). In the early months at school, some children may wet their underpants. This can be very embarrassing. Reassure them this can happen and encourage them to tell the teacher. Pack a spare pair of underpants in a plastic bag for emergencies. Be positive with your child in their ability to manage, if you worry, they will too! A few minutes can seem like a very long time to a small, unsure child. Try to make sure you are not late picking them up after school. Do whatever you can to make sure your child has eaten before they go to school and that they have got a healthy lunch. Lack of food has been evidenced to have a detrimental effect on behaviour and learning at school. Children can be extremely hungry after school so it is a good idea to provide a good snack at this time as they can be too tired to eat by tea time. Be flexible in the early days of school. Your child could be tired and grumpy till they settle in. Try not to organise too many after school activities for your child or yourself, for example shopping – it may not be worth it! When the timing is right, invite your child’s friends over one at a time, social development is as important as academic. Help your child to get to bed early as small children need approximately 12 hours sleep a night and early nights makes getting up much easier. This gives you plenty of time to get ready, reducing everyone’s stress levels before school. A much better start to the day! It helps if you read stories to children and just before bed is a good time to establish a quiet bed time routine and encourage learning. New learning can take quite a while and all children learn at different rates. Organise a special time together to talk every day with your child. If they have any troubles, discuss these and reassure them you will do your best to explain and or sort them out. Children need to know that their parents take a special interest in them individually and care. Discuss starting school with other parents and share your experiences, feelings and ideas. If troubles persist, such as tearfulness, tummy aches, behaviour changes, etc., talk this through with the teacher. The reverse can occur so let the teacher know also if anything at home could upset your child or change behaviours at school. Children do best at school when teachers and parents communicate and support each other. If parents or teachers have any health or advocacy concerns, the Public Health Nurse for your school is easily accessible. Just ask the school.
