Indiana Educators, Teachers, Librarians: This is your invitation to attend Indiana’s Bicentennial Summer Institute. We need YOU to help create Bicentennial legacy resources. Play a part in the creation of our Giant County Maps & County Timelines Interactive Project! The Bicentennial Summer Institute will take place: Sunday, July 12 – Thursday, July 16, 2015 in the rolling hills of historic Southern Indiana @ Indiana University Southeast. *Earn College Credits, Professional Growth Points, Library Education Units, GISP Points. *Scholarships for current ICSS Members Features of the Bicentennial Summer Institute: Two-Hundred Years: Mapping Indiana’s Bicentennial Institute will engage educators from each of Indiana’s 92 counties in a professional development field-based institute sponsored by organizations around the state. The purpose of the Institute is to assist educators with adding educational information to the design of a giant county map and timeline of their home counties. The county maps and timelines will become a legacy resource that provides lasting appreciation of Indiana as your State. Participation in the Institute includes many unique opportunities: Each participant will help design an original giant county map and timeline, along with strategies based on Indiana Academic Standards, to be circulated during the Bicentennial Year of 2016 and retained as a county resource for the future. Each county map and timeline will be translated into durable canvas models for local instruction and exhibits. Donations of $500 are being solicited from local schools, organizations and individuals to cover production costs of each set. Educators may bring family and youth to experience campus life at IU Southeast while jointly participating in educational training, networking opportunities, and a working vacation in the heart of Indiana’s birthplace. Participants will visit multiple sites of significance for teaching Indiana’s history, geography, economics and civics and optional sites chosen for enrichment, all adaptable to statewide instruction and academic standards. The program will feature outstanding presenters from across the state, including Judy O’Bannon, the wife of Indiana’s beloved Governor Frank O’Bannon, authors of Bicentennial materials, and dozens of optional field sites. Educators and youth may earn university, professional development, and public service credits, along with certificates of attendance, marking them as leaders for Indiana’s 2016 Bicentennial. 65 Professional Growth Points; 65 Library Education Units; 3 Graduate Credit Hours in Education; GIS Professional Points, too. One-day participation is available for $25.00 and professional development or public service credits/points. Participants contribute education ideas to the creation of a 10’x10’ county map and a timeline as a legacy resource for use by everyone in the county. The Harrison County Giant Map (at left) sparked the idea for creating data accurate maps (a piece of the Kosciusko County Map at right) for the IN Bicentennial County Map Project – encouraging literacy about Indiana communities, counties, and the state.
