Glenwood City Wrestling 2013-2014 Program Philosophy/Season Goals “BECOMING A CHAMPION INDIVIDUALLY” People tend to believe that “Champions” are individuals who win the most matches, win individual tournaments or multiple gold medals. I believe champions are individuals who strive to achieve their full potential on and off the mat. A true champion is a person who takes their given ability and talent to its highest level possible. They strive to achieve greatness every day in the practice room, classroom, in the community and in competition. I have had the privilege to coach high school state champion wrestlers and they all had different levels of talent. Every one of them shared characteristics that all wrestlers of different talent levels can learn from. They were dedicated, committed, aggressive, motivated, goal focused, fearless, unselfish, disciplined and most of all relentless in their pursuit to achieve their goals. They didn’t feel a sense of entitlement or the attitude of “getting something for nothing”. A Glenwood City Wrestler will be expected to strive for their full potential every day in the practice room, classroom and community. When a wrestler embraces that attitude with 100% belief and acts on it they will then truly know in their heart that they reached true greatness. “WIN WITH HUMILITY, LOSE WITH DIGNITY, BUT DON’T LOSE”. The integrity of the program and the wrestlers that make up the program will be the top priority in Glenwood City. How we conduct ourselves on and off the mat will be critical to our success. Following team rules, respecting our opponents and striving to be the absolute best within the rules of our sport are a must. Every decision we make both good and bad reflects on the program and school. Every wrestler in the program will have a role on the team, but no one will be more important than the other. Each individual will develop individual goals to strive for during the season. Each individual will understand that their commitment to the goals will make the team stronger. When our wrestlers truly commit to their individual goals, team success will follow. It will be an expectation that we take care of one another as a family. We will strive to make each other better daily, helping one another reach the individual goals. We will live by this statement, “Whatever you must need in life, the best way for you to get it is to help someone get it that needs it even more than you do”. 2013-2014 TEAM GOALS EXPERIENCE THE TRUE MEANING OF A TEAM o Truly care about your teammates and their success on and off the mat. o Come together with a common purpose and goal in mind. o Stay united through the good times and the bad times throughout the season. Support one another. o Experience a season with no black marks on the integrity of the program or school. LIVE THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAM AND DO IT WITH HONOR. TOP TEN TEAM FINISH NORTHERN BADGER o This goal does not make our season a success. It is a measuring stick for where we are half way through the season. Every team in our regional will be in this tournament. It will be a good indicator where we are and where we need to be to win the Regional title. DUNN-ST. CROIX CONFERENCE CHAMPS o Every year we should strive to win the conference title. We have a core of individuals that have the talent to score big bonus points in our dual schedule. In order for us to win this title there will be a group of new varsity wrestlers that will have to work to win big matches for us in tough dual meets. It is my belief that we have the toughest D3 conference in the state, competing at a high level every week only makes us better for when it really matters. WINNING DUAL MEET SEASON o We have established a winning tradition here at Glenwood City. We are working to achieve our 5th consecutive winning season as a dual meet team. REACH INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL o True success is defined by individuals and teams reaching their full potential. It is a goal of this program for each individual to reach their attainable goals based on experience, age, physical abilities and season circumstances. To achieve our goals we will need to commit to the following key elements in our sport to be successful. Physical Conditioning Aspect o When one gets tired, his performance is definitely decreased. Your ability is brought down to a lower level. Don’t cheat yourself in this area. o Superior strength and overall cardiovascular endurance are an absolute in our sport. Your weight training and extra conditioning will greatly aid a wrestler going in to compete at a high level. o Every day when you attend practice you need to work on your weaknesses. You must be conscious of your strengths, weakness, conditioning level and muscle condition. Workouts o Workouts will be held after school as scheduled on the calendar. Wrestlers are encouraged to run extra outside of practice time on days off or before school. o 10 MINUTES A DAY If you are willing to put in 10 extra minutes a day for the 85 days from the first practice until regionals you will have worked out an extra 14 hours to achieve your goals. That includes days off on the calendar, holidays, etc… Go for a 10 minute run with a teammate before school in the hallways. Stay after practice for 10 extra minutes to work on your weaknesses. 10 MINUTES MAY MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOU ACHIEVING OR NOT ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS. o Workout production It is one thing to attend a work out, but it is another to give 100% for the time you are there. It may be an hour, two hours or thirty minutes, what are you willing to give in that time period. Priorities o Family Your family is your #1 priority. Included in are your family values, religious beliefs and those closest to you. o Academics Your academic success and meeting your graduation requirements in your second priority. You can be a great athlete and still do well academically. It will take sacrifice to achieve greatness both academically and athletically, it is up to you. o Becoming a Champion Your next priority is working to be a champion. Refer to the program philosophy on what the true definition of a champion is. o Enjoying your relationships and experience in high school. This does not include alcohol, drugs or behavior that is forbidden by the school or WIAA. You can enjoy your time with friends and classmates without breaking the rules.
