2016 ANNUAL AWARDS -- CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The time has come to nominate those special individuals in the field of school counseling that have contributed so much to our profession. Recognitions highlight the achievements and accomplishments of our dedicated and hard-working colleagues. Awards will be given out at the CASC Annual Conference on October 9-10, 2015.

There are four CASC annual awards.

DONALD G. HAYS PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION AWARD –

Outstanding Counselor of the Year

Recognition of one’s exceptional work by his/her peers is a distinguished honor for any individual to receive.

CASC officially acknowledges the outstanding work of school counselors through the Donald G. Hays

Outstanding School Counselor Award.

The inspiration for this award emanates from the inspiration of our esteemed colleague Dr. Donald G. Hays who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. This is bestowed upon an individual for their commitment to the education of future ge nerations and for being a “Role Model” in the field of School Counseling. Dr. Hays also holds the exceptional distinction of being inducted into the H.B. McDaniel Foundation Hall of Fame by Stanford

University in 1995.

Criteria: An Outstanding School Counselor provides exemplary services to children, teachers, administrators, parents, the community, and the profession of school counseling. The nominee must

 Have a master’s degree in school counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential.

Be a full time practicing school counselor for a minimum of three years.

Be an active member of CASC.

Be an ASCA professional member.

The professional school counselor demonstrates:

Evidence of outstanding effort in the area of student advocacy in academic, career, personal and social growth through counseling (individual and group), large group guidance, consultation and coordination;

Evidence of exceptional effort in implementing a comprehensive, standards-based, developmental school counseling prog ram within the nominee’s school;

Evidence of being an integral and val ued member of the school’s team;

Evidence of continued professional growth and personal development;

Evidence of being active within the school counseling profession;

The CASC Counselor of the Year (COY) will be put forth as the ASCA COY nominee and must be willing to submit the national application. They must also have professional recognition at the state level. Additionally, the

CASC COY will be ex officio board member of CASC from October 9, 2015 through December 31, 2016.

COUNSELOR ADVOCATE AWARD

Criteria: A Counselor Advocate demonstrates exemplary advocacy through long-term support for school counseling in California through:

Evidence of advocacy work with and for school counselors, or

Evidence of programs, institutions or publications that support school counselors, or

Evidence of providing unique professional counseling service, or has developed a guidance program that is proven to be effective, or

Evidence of providing leadership in the area of school counselor education, or

Evidence of demonstrating exceptional leadership to school counseling.

LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Criteria: A Legislator of the Year is a legislator who has contributed to the advancement of school counseling in

California by sponsoring pertinent legislation to benefit California’s students.

Evidence of support for the school counseling profession through the legislative process

ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Criteria: The Administrator of the Year is a practicing school administrator who provides exceptional guidance and leadership and who is closely involved with achieving excellence in the area of student support.

HOW TO NOMINATE A CANDIDATE

Nomination letters for CASC Annual Awards must include:

Name, address, and office telephone number of nominee;

Reasons you and your affiliate believe this person merits this recognition;

Give specific details for each criterion, emphasizing those factors that make your nominee truly exceptional, a maximum of 500 words;

Acknowledgment from the nominee granting permission to be nominated;

Counselor of the Year Nomination - Submit two letters of nomination for your nominee, (initial nomination and one supporting nomination letter). Also, as the nominating person, your name, address, telephone numbers, and email;

Resume required for Counselor of the Year nominees, desirable for others.
