HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
POLICY AND PROCEDURES
Purpose:
The Shelby County Band Directors Association Scholarship was established to assist in
funding the education of Shelby County All-County Honor Band members.
Value:
$1000.00 beginning in 2014.
Applicant Criteria:
 All interested students should complete a scholarship application.
 The recipient should be a graduating senior of either sex and an active member of a high school
band within Shelby County.
 The recipient must be a responsible, conscientious student, with demonstrated character and
leadership qualities.
 The recipient should have participated in the Shelby County All-County High School Honor Band
for at least two years. Participation in events beyond the regular high school band class (e.g.
All-State Band, District Solo and Ensemble Festival, All-State Jazz Band, and college honor bands)
will be considered.
 The recipient will be chosen by the Shelby County Band Directors Association.
 The scholarship will be awarded at the annual Shelby County All-County Honor Band Festival.
 The applicant for this scholarship must be planning on participating in band at the college level.
 The check for this one-year scholarship will be written directly to the college or university of the
recipient’s choice.
Application Process:
 Candidates must completely fill out the Scholarship application form which will include:
o Band director recommendation.
o Submit list of honors/achievements.
o Submit short narrative explaining what they’ve learned by being a band student.
Deadline for Application:
Funding:
February 1 of each year.
The Shelby County Band Director’s Association Scholarship funds will be maintained by
the SCBDA.

Dispersion of Funds:
A check will be written and sent along with a cover letter to the financial aid office of the
recipient’s choice of school once proof of acceptance is presented to the SCBDA. The cover letter will
include information to which is needed for the scholarship to be applied to the recipient’s tuition or
fees. Checks for any part or the entire scholarship will not be written to an individual student. The
scholarship award may be withdrawn if the student does not follow through on the continued education
plan presented on the application. It will be the responsibility of the SCBDA to contact the Financial
Aid Office of the recipient’s school and follow procedure to send the check.
Selection of the Recipient:
All completed applications handed in before the deadline will be considered. The SCBDA will
make the selection of the recipient. It is the responsibility of the SCBDA to make the best choice when
considering all the required criteria. It is also the responsibility of the SCBDA to notify the appropriate
high school guidance department of the scholarship, the amount and the recipient’s name in a timely
manner as to allow the announcement of the award at awards day programs and/or graduation
exercises.
Awarding the scholarship:
The scholarship will be presented with the following introduction: “The Shelby County Band
Director’s Association Scholarship is given to a deserving participant of the Shelby County All-County
Honor Band. The scholarship is maintained by the Shelby County Band Director’s Association and is in
the amount of _$1000.00__. This year’s recipient of the Shelby County Band Director’s Association
Scholarship is ______________.”
