Course Choices 2015-16
The following course choices are offered to Easton students whose schedules and requirements
allow for room in their schedule to choose. Some periods are comprised of only required
courses and all students are prescheduled to take those courses. Periods 1, 3, and 5 are
currently scheduled for all students. Below is a list of courses for students and parents to
review. If your grade is not listed it means that unless you have special circumstances your
class has already been scheduled for this block of time. Students need to call the District Office
(509) 656-2317, stop by, or email hendersonl@easton.wednet.edu in order to finalize their
schedule for the Semester 1.
PERIOD 2
CONSUMER MATH
Instructor: Dr. Phil Derrick
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 11th-12th
Graduation Requirement: Math, Elective
Course Description: Consumer Math reinforces general math topics (such as arithmetic using rational
numbers, measurement, ratio and proportion, and basic statistics) and apply these skills to consumer
problems and situations. Applications typically include budgeting, taxation, credit, banking services,
insurance, buying and selling products and services, home/and or car ownership and retail, managing
personal income, and investment.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Instructor: Mrs. Marchel Allenbaugh
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 11th-12th
Graduation Requirement: English, Elective
Course Description: Public Speaking courses enable students, through practice, to develop
communication skills that can be used in a variety of speaking situations (such as small and large group
discussions, delivery of lectures or speeches in front of audiences, and so on). Course topics may include
(but are not limited to) research and organization, writing for verbal delivery, stylistic choices, visual and
presentation skills, analysis and critique, and development of self-confidence.

WEIGHT TRAINING
Instructor: Mr. Brian Todd
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 9th-12th
Graduation Requirement: Physical Education, Elective
Course Description: Weight training helps students develop knowledge and skills with free weights and
universal stations while emphasizing safety and proper body positioning; this may include other
components such as anatomy and conditioning.
WORLD HISTORY
Instructor: Dr. Phil Derrick
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 9th-12th
Graduation Requirement: Social Studies, History, Elective
Course Description: World History provides an overview of the history of human society from early
civilization to the contemporary period, examining political, economic, social, religious, military,
scientific, and cultural developments. World History—Overview courses may include geographical
studies, but often these components are not as explicitly taught as geography.
PERIOD 6
ADVANCED BIOLOGY
Instructor: Ms. Theresa Plue
Prerequisite: Biology
Grades: 11th-12th
Graduation Requirement: Science, Elective
Course Description: Usually taken after a comprehensive initial study of biology, Advanced Biology
covers biological systems in more detail. Topics that may be explored include cell organization, function,
and reproduction; energy transformation; human anatomy and physiology; and the evolution and
adaption of organisms.
FINANCIAL ALGEBRA
Instructor: Mr. Daniel Barrera
Prerequisite: Algebra
Grades: 10th-12th
Graduation Requirement: Math, Elective
Course Description: Financial Algebra course teaches students to apply algebra concepts to a variety of
business and financial situations. Applications usually include income, insurance, credit, banking,
taxation, stocks and bonds, and finance.
STRATEGIC READING
Instructor: Mrs. Marchel Allenbaugh
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 9th-12th
Graduation Requirement: English, Elective
Course Description: Strategic Reading is intended to improve a student’s vocabulary, critical-thinking
and analysis skills, or reading rate and comprehension level. This course will emphasize both works of
fiction, and nonfiction. Strategic Reading courses often have a time management focus, offering
strategies for note-taking or for understanding and evaluating the important points of a text.
PERIOD 7
ARCHERY
Instructor: Mrs. Ce Ce Badda
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 9th-12th
Graduation Requirement: Physical Education, Elective
Course Description: Archery will help students develop knowledge, experience, and skills using various
styles of bows. This will include the maintenance and care of equipment, safety, and the use of a bow in
various environments.
BIBLE AS LITERATURE
Instructor: Dr. Phil Derrick
Prerequisite: Parental Approval
Grades: 9th-12th
Graduation Requirement: English, Elective
Course Description: Biblical Literature has the same aim as general literature courses (to improve
students’ language arts and critical-thinking skills), focusing on the books of the Bible. Students may
compare techniques, styles, and themes of the various books; examine the Bible’s influence on secular
literature; and may study historical events of Biblical times. Oral discussion is an integral part of these
courses, and written compositions are often required.
ROBOTICS
Instructor: Ms. Theresa Plue
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 7th-12th
Graduation Requirement: CTE, Elective
Course Description: Robotics develops and expands students’ skills and knowledge so that they can
design and develop robotic devices. Topics covered in the course may include mechanics, electrical and
motor controls. This particular class will work towards participation in robotic competitions which have
specifications for the robot and specific tasks for the student designed robots to complete. This class is
offered as a partnership with the GEAR UP program.
SCHOOL NEWSPAPER
Instructor: Mrs. Marchel Allenbaugh
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 7th-8th
Graduation Requirement: Elective
Course Description: School newspaper will focus on the production of a monthly newspaper for Easton
School. The course will emphasize writing style and technique as well as production values and
organization. School Newspaper will introduce students to the concepts of newsworthiness and press
responsibility; develop students’ skills in writing and editing stories, headlines, and captions; and teach
students the principles of production design, layout, and printing. Photography and photojournalism
skills may be included.
CULINARY ARTS II
Instructor: Chef Jim Giaudrone
Prerequisite: Culinary Arts I
Grades: 10th-12th
Graduation Requirement: CTE, Elective
Course Description: Culinary Arts II will focus on providing instruction regarding nutrition, principles of
healthy eating, and the preparation of food. Among the topics covered are large-scale meal
preparations, preserving nutrients throughout the food preparation process, use and care of commercial
cooking equipment, food storage, advances in food technology, sanitation, management, and the
careers available in the food service industry.
