FIFTH SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT — Tone 1. St Mary of Egypt. Hieromartyr Mark, Bishop of Arethusa, Martyr Cyril the Deacon, of Heliopolis, and others who suffered under Julian the Apostate (ca. 364). Venerable John, Anchorite, of Egypt (4th century). St. Eustathius the Confessor, Bishop of Bithynia (9th century). Hebrews 9:11-14 Mark 10:32-45 We know that St. Mary of Egypt lived a profligate life but that at her conversion, she spent many years in the desert of Jordan in prayer, abstinence and fasting. She was discovered by the monastic elder, Zosimas who was humbled at having at last met a God-bearing being who had attained the perfection of monastic life. At the urging of Zosimas, St. Mary recounted to him with tears the story of her life and conversion. Then, having finished her account, she begged him to come the following year to the bank of the Jordan with Holy Communion. When the day arrived, Zosimas saw Mary appearing on the further bank of the river. She made the sign of the Cross and crossed the Jordan, walking on the water. Having received Holy Communion weeping, she said: "Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word; for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation" (Luke 2:29). The feast day of Saint Mary of Egypt is April 1, the day of her repose, however the Orthodox Church also commemorates the Saint on the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed. Kontakion — Tone 3 Having been a sinful woman, / you became through repentance a Bride of Christ. / Having attained angelic life, / you defeated demons with the weapon of the Cross. / Therefore, most glorious Mary, you are a Bride of the Kingdom! The Martyrs earned paradise with their blood; the Monastics, with their ascetic life. Now we, my brethren, who beget children, how shall we earn paradise? With hospitality, by relieving the poor, the blind, the lame, as Joachim did . . . Almsgiving, love, and fasting sanctify man, enrich him in both soul and body, and bring him to a good end; the body and the soul become holy. + St. Cosmas of Aetolia Holy Trinity Parish Council Bill Cullinan, Senior Warden Niki Barna, Treasurer Barbara Babich Jean Constantine Andy Stachow John Babiak, Junior Warden & Financial Secretary Carol Wetmore, Secretary George Bohensky Sandra Masklee Carol Tarassoff Holy Trinity Orthodox Church “Offering the Fullness of the Christian Faith” PO Box 630, Ironia, NJ 07845: 120 Dover-Chester Road, Randolph, NJ 07869 www.holytrinityrandolph.com 973-366-8360 Rev.
